Unless there's some custom work there. that starter should come right out. if you angle the front end of it down. The trans cooler lines should move just enough to give you room. Just ,make sure you disconnect the negative battery cable before you start.
I was able to just barely wiggle it out and I've gotten a new one however I'm confused because from what I've looked up there should be a total of 4 wires. however, I only have 3 wires with what looks like 2 of them being fused. there is however what looks like a ground wire to the bracket. Does anyone have the diagram for wiring a 79 starter

As said above, your reds and the battery cable go on the TOP terminal.
The small wire goes to the 'S' terminal which is the small terminal closest to the block.
If you have a thick black wire it is a ground and connects to a starter or bell housing bolt.
You do have 4 wires.
#1 Positive cable from the battery
#2 Fuse link circuit(s)
#3 Start circuit
No other black wires will attach to the starter.
Somewhere in the starter harness there will be a #14 gauge black wire with 3/8" eyelet that connects to the lower bell housing bolt.
That #14 black wire serves as the wiper motor, blower motor and anti-theft hood switch ground.
May also serve as the coil ground for the high speed blower relay if A/C equipped.

Thank you guys I was able to get it hooked up however I'm kinda stumped. I replaced the battery which would hold a charge but wasn't pushing enough power under load. I also had the starter tested and then replaced it however I'm back to square 1 when I turn the key it makes a single clunk noise but doesn't startup which is what it did before i replaced the bad battery and starter
any suggestions on what it could be would be very helpful

battery ground triple check (under car). .and terminals connection..
really look close at insulation and remove and clean contacts..
Check and make sure the engine is grounded to the chassis.
If all is well and the battery tests out then either the gear is smacking the flexplate/flywheel or that starter is garbage too. Shim it first to see if there is any change...if not, take your "new" one back.....do yourself a favor and buy a permanent magnet mini starter........I recommend the CVR 5323.
@Jebbysan Please don't scare me like that xD I have ptsd after having to take out the old one and put in the new one. I'm going to go ahead and clean all of the cable links off first since they all are gummed up and if that doesn't work ill just have to hate life again trying to remove the starter again. Idk if this makes any difference but the Gen and fasten belt lights come up on the dash and when I turn the key stuff budges a little like it want to go but nothing past that
Also for reference where can I find the engine ground and the battery ground?

Just a thought - have you ever had the motor running? With the trans in neutral, can you rotate the crankshaft by turning the nut on the harmonic balancer? This would let you know if the engine is seized or not.
@Catfish4818 the engine isn't seized I've
add it running for 100 miles before it all the sudden just wouldn't start but I have checked that and I'm able to turn it over by hand
just pulled this out as well so this might be part of my problem the battery ground is super corroded

the round ring contact area is not the issue.. the swelled up area below the ring is bad..replace it.. the ground is the cheaper easier one..it is due.. you can never take enough pics.. what does battery side look like? 1976-1982 Corvette Negative Battery Cable (zip-corvette.com)
it's swelled halfway up the cable so I just went ahead and bought a new one. That however still did not fix the issue I tested to see if the starter was getting power and if it dropped under load. it is getting proper power so either the starter I was sold is bad or I'm thinking the flywheel might have some teeth taken out of it.
Either. Both starters are bad..or something else..im betting something else..
got jumper cables? Try your original starter and see if it works outside the car..
