Default Difference in Summits HB vs the ATI?

Sure enough my 6 has met it's long awaited destiny of the infamous HB wobble, it is very faint but it's a coming and I want to be ready. I tried doing some research a bit all the threads are older. What's the difference in the Summit HB vs the ATI which is almost double the price? I also intend on a shop doing this as I don't have the time to DIY. Other than a belt and possible front main seal, is anything else needed for the repair? Thanks!

In for opinions, I'm in the same boat needing mine replaced.

I also hear a lot of people suggesting the powerbond as it's about half the price as well

this was one of the ones I was looking at, my car is about to roll 47k miles and even though the wobble is very slight, since I take it to the track, I would rather just do it now than wait for it to get worse

as for the balancer, I think ATI is considered the gold standard so to speak, but pretty much anything other than stock or stock type replacement should be miles better

I just installed one of those on a car a couple of weeks ago. I highly recommend it. It went in easy and is really nice. The ATI is great as well (have one on my car), but is definitely more work to install since you have to assemble it. If you're going for stock diameter I would go for the summit balancer.

FWIW, I've heard, but don't know, that the Summit HB is a Powerbond. Anyway, its been on a 1998 c5 we DYI'd about a year ago and I would recommend it. Seems very well made, better than OEM.

You'll probably be good with either. I went with an ATI because the extra $200+/- during the build wasn't really going to matter at that point. Plus I never have to worry about whether I should have gotten the "better" one. If you're just doing the balancer then price shopping is understandable.

Stay away from ASP!

Also, can someone explain the groove in the pulley itself? What is that used for and do I need another part to go with the Summit Pulley? I've been looking and other dampeners do not have this, it's just smooth throughout. Is this to 'pin it'? From me research, this is used for more FI applications, but I am staying NA. I am struggling to see why the Summit One is $200 and this Orileys one is $90 other than one's steel and the other's iron.

example: This ORileys Powerbond: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...monic+balancer

Thank you

You are thinking correctly. The summit one has a keyway that would allow you to pin the crank with a kit like the ATI pinning kit.

The powerbond is built just like the factory one and may or may not be any better than stock...people seem to have pretty good luck with them however. I think you are paying for the sfi cert with the summit one. It's definitely a nice piece.

Hey thanks for the reply sevinn.

Do I need the pin kit with summit one? I guess a better way to put it is do I need to pin it, or can I leave the keyway un-pinned? Obviously the Summit one looks like a better product, probably weighs a little lighter due to the construction material too.

You don't have to pin it

On a '98 LS1 we left the Summit balancer un-pinned. The ARP Bolt covers the hole as I recall. No problems a year later.

The stock bolt will cover the hole as well, although ATI balancers also come pinned and they recommend dropping a little RTV in the keyway just to be safe.
