Default What is inside structural body cross member inside car behind seats?

I signed up for a Mid-Ohio track day in September and I want to mount my video camera on a tripod inside the vehicle. I would like to screw the mount into that structural cross member that is inside the vehicle covered in carpet and directly behind the front seats.

Does anyone know what is inside that thing? Can I use 2.5" long decking screws or should I drill though it and use a bolt and a nut?

Thanks, Mike

How big is the camera? Size, weight? Could you use a suction mount like some do with a GoPro? I have seen a number of cameras attached to the inside of the windshield to the right of the rear view mirror or even the upper right corner. There are also mounts that have a base plate that would allow you to attach it to the top of the dash using a suction mount.

It would be a good idea to add a retention strap or cord so if would come loose, it won't bounce around inside the car.

First of all what in the world would make you want to use a 2.5 inch long screw when the material is not even 3/16ths and on top of that a decking screw that is meant for wood in metal. Let's start with the right tools before we start hacking the car together

Well that was the reason for my question. I had no idea how thick the material was. As far as I knew, it was solid with a foam core center. That is exactly why I sought out additional information. The forum replies were extremely helpful and provided the info I needed. Especially the photos!

I have a GoPro clipped to the inside of the windshield but wanted to mount a a second, larger SLR size camera inside the car where it would see the dash. It is kind of heavy for a suction mount to the inside of the rear window as the defrost wires prevent a really good seal of the suction cup to the glass. Thanks to the info provided on this forum I was able to screw the mount to my cross member without screwing into the fuel cross over line. Very, very helpful info!
