Default 2016 A8 hard/firm shift 1 to 2

All,
I've searched the forum, but didn't find a direct thread, and the general A8 issue threads can be a mile long.

When my car is "cold" the very first shift from 1st to 2nd gear is noticeably lurchy/clunky.
All other shifts are smooth, even 1to2 is smooth after the very first shift.
Car has 1,800 miles.
Thoughts? Thanks

My 2016 does the same thing. I get around it by going to "M" mode and accelerating to 8 mph, taking my foot off the accelerator and manually shifting to 2nd while coasting. The shift is smooth and all subsequent shifts under acceleration are smooth. Another way is to select "M" and while standing still, select 2nd with the paddle shifter thus, starting out in 2nd and bypassing the 1st to 2nd shift. This car has the needed torque to make 2nd gear starts with no problems.

Be real carful, those systems problems could lead to transmission failure as has been described here in other threads. You might take the time to read these as it is very important.

Nature of the beast my friend. Mine has done it since new, and with 6500 miles on the odo the tranny is still going strong. Many do as Cirrus8 to help with the first shift. I usually just pull into the roadway from the house at a easy pace (we don't have a lot of traffic), and let it make that first change. You'll fine the way that suits you best.

FYI, mine has become less lurchy with more miles. These tranny's have "adaptive learning", and need quite a few miles to learn your style of driving.

Just one, still covered by orig B2B?
If it's under warranty take it to [a] dealer so this matter's on record.
They may even give it the 3-flush treatment, which IIRC begins GM's process for dealing w/ jerky A8s. G/L

Thanks all. I have read some of the threads - there are many and they are long. I will continue to monitor. There are currently no other flaws observed.
Hopefully it learns and shifts better. Otherwise it will be to the dealer since it's still under warranty.

Along the same lines as already mentioned, while still in the garage before moving the car, start the engine and put the transmission selector all the way down past "D" and into "M". The indicator tells you it's in 1st gear on the dash.

Click the paddle shift once to bump it into 2nd. Then put it back in drive or reverse and you're good to go; eliminates the hard 1st to 2nd first shift of the day.

Best of luck!

That's your best bet. It should be fine.

If you have to "bump it" that's not right. Mine is in shop because the drive train finally took out crankshaft. End play is a problem.

Sounds like an early '16, quite common issue; the dealer can re-flash the control module and send you on your way. I have a late '15 and had the same issues plus the "Hard Garage Shift".....that's when you put into gear after setting overnight or longer and you can count 1 to 3 Mississippi's before the car moves with a lurch. The hard 1-2 shift like you are experiencing went away with the first re-flash; we are still working on different flash programs to kill the Garage Shift.

Good luck

While glad some owners found a work-around, wonder if next owners will figure it out? Car would long be OOW by then and a sizable repair will be on new owner, otherwise. Unless one's willing to put-up w/ jerkiness & other weird behaviors 'til it one day dies, they're stuck.

Good grief it's an automatic transmission, ATs must shift smooth & crisp regardless mode, hot or warm. Period. Anything less is a compromise, of some sort.

While this one's still on GM's dime is The Time to get it resolved.
IF owners w/ this issue waits, so be it. It's on them.

I have a 2015 , but mine was doing the same thing. I did have the dealer look at it and they did an update of the software. It's better, for now.

My 16 does the same.

Maybe I'll have the dealer re-flash next time I'm in.

I read on a Service Bulletin (don't have the number) that GM has changed the service instructions for the dealers to stop the triple flush and to change the unit instead.

Our 2017 with 5800 miles is similar, noticeable but not horrible.

Our 2009 A6 Corvette did the same, so does our 2005 Toyota beater.

I'm not going to worry unless it gets worse.

My ‘16 has done the same only on the cold 1-2 shift and only if I’m a little heavy on the gas. If I feather the throttle I don’t feel it. The rest of the time if functions perfectly. 8,500 miles knock on wood.

I haven’t taken it for service and don’t plan to as long as it drives normally otherwise. If you go looking for problems...
