Default What's the quietest exhaust that sets off alarms?

I'm getting a new (to me) 1961 NOM 350 5-speed Tremec.

I'd like to play with the sound. I'm not even sure what's on the car now.

I love a very deep exhaust, but I don't want to bother the neighbors.

So what's the maximum amount of sound that sets off car alarms that doesn't sound too loud?

What mufflers, and what size tuning all along. I assume still exiting in the stock location.

Thanks!

Matt

Open headers are the best bet. At idle just loud enough, anything above idle will probably bother neighbors.

Then again, what type neighbors do you have and how close are they?

No experience on car alarm trigger.

40 series flow masters sounded like WAR on my 69 corvette when I was 19 (many years ago). No one complained and no alarms sounded.

Listens to some clips on YouTube of small block Chevy exhaust options. You'll find something.

YouTube audio quality is all over the map,

I need to go to some car shows.

I had Smitty mufflers on a Ford flathead and absolutely loved that sound.

Brockman mellow tones are nice too.

If someone makes chambered exhaust for a solid axle that’s what I would buy

All the drug dealers and gang-bangers in California prefer Flowmasters. You may want to look into those. They do set off car alarms, which is on your 'to-do' list.

I don't know that I've ever heard a better sounding machine than original-style off-road mufflers on a solid lifter 283. You can get louder, you can get quieter and you can get some that sound like Jiffy-pop. But not better...

I think that's what I'm leaning towards.

Thanks!

You won't regret it. A nice rumble at idle and when you open it up a healthy deep-throated roar. A vintage sound that turns the ricer's head every time...

Jiffy Pop? Excellent choice. All the newer Mustangs in my area sound like that. Very loud, and very sharp.....a noticeable 'rap' to the exhaust. You hear a huge commotion, look around for the source, and see a late model Mustang ambling down the street in what looks like slow motion.......

I do like the 'snarl' of some of the mustang exhausts; don't whether they are stock mufflers or something else

I'm starting with the Off Road mufflers from Corvette Central.

I'll report back.

I'm tempted to do a bypass valve. In the old days, the Mr Gasket cast iron ones were crap. Now they're integrated into aftermarket mufflers with electric controls.

Matt,

I installed the CC off-road exhausts on my 350 LT-1 '61.. I'm very happy with the sound.. Edgy but not extreme. Although no alarms have been triggered yet!

Sound from inside the car (having a little poke of fun at Zora with my son!):
