Default question

My car is 08 with 70k milles on it, i think that i need to replace the harmonic balancer, my question which symptoms should i hear or feel when the harmonic balancer is bad. Right now i have little problem with idle(RPM jumps back and forth)car sound like it is cammed but its not. Coudl it be harmonic balancer?ThNAKS

If you look down at the harmonic balancer when the engine is running and watch it, if it wobbles then it needs replacement, if it looks smooth and well balanced it doesn't.

These cars LS3 tend to idle roughly anyway.

Check visually as suggested.

yesterday i cleaned TB it was very dirty, when i stated to drove the car i noticed that when i depress the clutch RPM goes up to 1500-2000 rpm, they do not drop....its become even harder to brake because engine somehow holds the rpm. Also got check engine code. My harmonic balancer not wouble but i see how it shakes.

You need to set the relearn feature on the TB. TB do not like to be messed with.
Went through this myself, but I also had a failing MAF. Dealer did the TB relearn procedure for 75. Took a few miles till everything was back to normal.

It will relearn on its own if you drive in the specific manner that triggers the TB check. Might take a logo time to trigger, and very unsafe conditions till then.

A little wobble is normal on our cars.
Belt will chirp when first started, normally, if HB has a serious wobble. Belt will wear on edge. Chirp will go away temporarily with a new belt.

Mind has a slight wobble but Service says it is within specs. 196,000 miles with no noise or problem.

Most prefer the ATI balancer. Get a new balancer bolt also.

so run the car over 45 mph, decelerate for several times, then let it idle and do this for several cycles without turning off the key?

There will be little doubt when the HB starts going bad. Mine shrieked so badly I was afraid I was going to wake the neighbors.

As far as a little shake at idle, that is normal. I was concerned at first since none of my C4s or my C5 did this. I have almost gotten used to it.

Hmm. I had a tech friend look at my HB (because another pair of eyes is always a good thing), and he noticed a wobble. But, I'm not experiencing other issues such as a squeal.

A search of this forum says any wobble is bad. The HB is not supposed to wobble.

I will continue searching ...

No need to continue to search ..they all can wobble a tiny bit , but keep an eye on it . My new one wobbles ever so slightly I check it at least once a month since and in a year and a half it has not gotten any worse ... if you see yours wobbling more than what you are seeing now ... replace it

Mine chirped so loud that other drivers looked at me at red lights.
