Default Spare tire carrier bolts - part 2

So my first attempt at making extended spare tire carrier bolts to handle my oversize spare did not work out so well. My spare is a full size tire (205/70R15 on a 15 x 6 inch wheel) that matches the tires on the car.

The original bolts are 9 1/4 inches long.

The factory extended bolts are 9 5/8 inches long

My first attempt just made a set of extended bolts 9 5/8 inches long. They turned out to still be a bit too short.

This time I measured what I actually needed. The bolts turned out to be right at 10 inches long.

Yesterday I finished the final welding and painting. I actually spent more time fighting with my welder that I did doing the actual welding.

OK, onto the next project, installing the parts needed to support the installation of Air Conditioning.

Very nice work!
Have to ask. When you close up the tire tub lid with your fabricated bolts does it still stay a bit open due to tire width?
I get mine to close nicely with a 185 x 15 tire on an oem 15" gm rim .

Yes it does stay open a bit. This is also what happens with the factory extended bolts.

The spare tire carrier is not intended to be air or water tight, even with the factory standard carrier bolts.

I think a later model spare tire carrier setup would have eliminated the need for extended bolts.

But my ultimate goal was to make sure I had a spare that matched the tires on the car. I did not want to have to swap a bad rear tire with a good front tire in the event of a flat.

Ed - as an additional data point, when I was researching '67 tire tub bolts, I found the tub was mounted with two 9-5/8” long front bolts and a 7” locking bolt for both steel and Al wheels with non-redline tires. That was for a 7.75-15 tire mounted on a 15x6 rally wheel (or 15x6 Al bolt-on). With the redline tire option (RPO QB1), the tub was installed with 10-3/8 long front bolts and an 8” long locking bolt to accommodate the wider redline tires.

Yes, I believe they went to longer bolts on the later year cars. I considered changing to a later year carrier setup.
