Default Longer Shifter Lever & T-Handle Issue

I have to reach a bit too much to reach stock shifter for 1st and 3rd gear.
A longer shifter lever would help or a curve lever.
Is there such a product for the stock shifter?
Also, the left side of reverse lockout t-handle can get into my leg when shifting into 2nd and cornering.
Can the t-handle be eliminated or left side filed off leaving on the right side of T?

Methinks a short, round driver.

If those two things bother you enough, I think a Hurst shifter may be in your future.

Legs are long and arms are short I guess.
Seat fully back results in bent legs.
Moved pedals down, removed shifter t-handle, declined the seat back, much better now.
Removing t-handle just requires extra side pressure to get into reverse.
My shifter is attached with 2 bolts, so it may be a Hurst that looks like a stock shifter.

If your shifter handle is held to the shifter mechanism with two bolts on the shaft, you're in business. You can remove the T with no ill effects, and/or you can get any of MANY Hurst handles that will curve to fit your needs. You don't need to change anything else but the handle. Just like the one I showed you in the picture if you like, or more curved if you'd rather.

That's not mine, I just looked up a picture to show you an example. Check any of the vendors, or Summit or Jegs, The Hurst handles are universal for the most part, just get the height and curve you want. They aren't cheap, but cheaper than replacing the whole shifter assy. I'm thinking around a hundred bucks. Maybe check Craigslist or ebay for a used one?

Glad the OP got the shifter on his VW Bus figured out! He can now take corners with real zest!

I researched the shifter adjustment topic for my '75 until I was blue in the face. I don't think I missed any internet post regarding the shifter. This post along with the accompanying threads were by far the best and most thorough. My wife and I, yes my wife, after reviewing this post one more time, went to the garage and after an hour or so were able to successfully shift the car into reverse; and the other four gears with ease.

The shifter was in the car while the adjustment was made. I don't think this is cheating but I have to admit that I have a 10,000# two post hydraulic lift in my garage. This beats the crap out of laying on a creeper.

My tip: if the shifter is in the car, which it was, remove the 3rd/4th gear linkage rod totally from the shifter and the transmission. Removal of this rod make it so much easier to get your hand into the workspace.
We also unbolted the 1st/2nd rod from the tranny, leaving it on the shifter and unbolted the reverse linkage from the tranny only as well. This allowed us to insert the adjustment tool all the way through the shifter, and move the shifter linkages much easier.

This whole ordeal started when I removed the tranny, the shifter, bell housing, to replace the clutch. I had no clue that the shifter can easily get out of adjustment. Had I known I would have inserted the little shifter linkage adjustment tool I made into the shifter before I put it back in the car.

Now that I have my baby running and off the lift. I'll be searching for a good paint/body shop.

are you sure you postef on the right thread? Even though it's a year-and-a-half-old, it didn't seem like that was the right topic
