I have the rivets out and all but one bolt. When I turn the bolt it starts to get loose and then pops back down. Is there a backing nut somewhere hidden by fiberglass? Also I have read to gently rock out the dash to separate the bottom seam and also to use a stiff putty knige and give it a hammer whack. Which is better?
See if you can get some needle nose pliers under that bolt head while simultaneously unscrewing it, it should come out...even if the jaws won't go all the way under -- just gripping even a little bit under the head while unscrewing it may do the trick.
A quick, "rap" with a closed fist behind the lower waterfall will break that epoxy joint loose easily...less force than you would use to pound a hubcap rim on....

My thought is that the nut on the back is stripped and forcing some upward pressure on the bolt head would get it past that area.... I don't know if you can get to the back of this area to hold the nut while loosening the bolt..

Funny, I posted while you were editing. I guess at this point my best bet would be to get the windshield out and see if I can access the back of that clip. Will it be exposed with the windshield out?

Ok. thanks. The only other thing I can think of is to maybe see if I can get a putty between the dash and that tab from underneath hoping that it will stop the tab rotation.
you can not gain access behind that nut. that area is metal part of the bird cage. You are going to have to get that bolt out, no other access at all. I would try a pair of vice grips that I could clamp on that nut head and pull like hell while trying to turn it. my dash looks just like Franks and my windshield is out as is most of the car.
I believe the tab is broken. When I turn the bolt the outer piece does not move. I stuck a angle pick to the inside of clip and as I spin the bolt I get resistance on the pick. Only problem is the pick isn’t strong enough to hold the clip back.

Maybe just surrender to it and cut the bolt head off with something like a Fein Multimaster or one of the less expensive clones available. Pays to have one of those in your arsenal.

76? I just looked at the phone weather and it will be down to our low of 81 at 7am. 92 at midnight. We are having some record days right now. We get hot but haven’t had any real bad summers for several years that I can remember. Tomorrow is supposed to be 109-110. Better get to paint stripping early I guess.
I just went through this. Get a 3/8 inch wrench to hold the head and use a 1/4 drill bit and drill the head off. You will be done in a minute or so. I had to drill out 3 on mine.
Remember at the bottom of the waterfall there is a large **** that is glued on that the water fall buts up against. I made the mistake of cutting it off. If you take the radio out first you can see it.
Thanks John. I stuck the dremel up there and the wheel is to close for comfort. I’m got my endoscope out to see what was there and it looks like a beveled square nut that was arrached to the clip at some point. Getting the wrench and drill now.
