What is this and should it be hooked up?
So, I was recurving the distributor on my 78 PC and I noticed this component and some dodgy wiring around it. There is a wire that runs to one side and it is spliced to run back to the other side. Said another way, it is a closed circuit and not hooker up to anything else. Important?

That, my friend, is a Tach Filter. Its job is to calm down the signals from the dizzy before they go to the tach itself. If ever your tach needle is bouncing all over the place, this filter is the first place to look. More specifically, the wires and how well the solder joints are on the ends.

That I do not know. Unless an aftermarket tach has been installed on the steering column? Your original tach working ok?

Yeah, my tach was working fine. Tested the filter using some rough procedures I found on the forums and resistance seems to be in line. Will try hooking it back up and see what happens. If it is squirrelly, I will bypass it again. Easy enough to do. Thanks for the help. 👍
