Default Avons For My '62

My Avon V Rated 15" tires arrived today. My '62 is coming of the rack just in time. Gotta get my American Racing mags cleaned and polished and buy a new set of center caps, cause my baby's gonna shine. Not thinking of hitting 150mph any time soon, but if I do, I'll have the tires to do it with.

Are those the CR6ZZ?? Just curious where you ordered from as I’m about to order a set of 225/60/15 for my ‘64.

Thanks,
Greg

Greg, got mine from Sasco Motorsports in VA, although they didn’t have any of the 275’s in stock so referred me to Roger Krause on the west coast for those. Both were great places to deal with.

Thanks,

The tread pattern is easily recognizable as the CR6ZZ.

Its the only real performance tire available in 15" sizes. Plus, the tread pattern makes it look very similar to the old bias ply tires. The Cobra and GT40 guys use them extensively. There are one or two other guys on the forum running them...not cheap, but I can't wait to get a set on my car.

The Avon CR6ZZ is a DOT legal racing tire with a wear rating of 80 and is available in sizes that will fit OE C2 wheels without fender modifications. The V speed rating means it has the safety of a spiral wrapped nylon cap belt that will keep the tire from disintegrating if there is ever an internal structural failure.

With "sport" alignment settings, it should provide close to 1g cornering and braking. In normal road use it should last about 10K miles, but less with a lot of sporty driving, and much less with track events.

I bought mine from Roger Krauss. They're in the SF East Bay. I was able to do a comparison at his store of three different size Avons and I liked the 225/65 the best. I recommend those seriously interested in a set of their own to do the same. They are pricey. I read Tire Rack has a good selection of 15" tires but the best they offer is an H rated tire.
Roger, the owner, told me the tires would last me 15-17 thousand miles. For me that would be about 5 years. Who wants to be driving 6 year old tires, right??
Yes, these are the CR6-ZZ tires. I was surprised how light they are. These are going to be road tires, not track tires.

To me, this is sound logic, the way I drive my own old cars. 2500 miles a year, plus or minus. So most of my tires that are radials end up with less than 20k miles on them when they are long past their expiration date.....but have about 75% of their tread left. I have no issue with 6 year old tires, personally, but have noticed that they tend to get harder and less pliable after 10 years or so. So, the idea of paying a bit more for a competition grade tire that will be super sticky for spirited driving that will last 15-17k miles and keep the vehicle safe for the next 6-8 years seems like a good solution. At least when it's time to replace the tires, they will actually be worn out at the time that they hit their expiration date. Win-win, IMO. Plus, they LOOK correct for these old cars.

Thanks GT. I'll wait until I have them mounted to take a full view pic. Right now they have that ugly powdered look except for the tread part. I plan to have them mounted, balanced and aligned next week.

These look like good sizes for the AVON CR6ZZ-DOT tire that will present the fewest fitment problems for a stock C1 - C2

225/60R15 Rim Recommend 6.0 - 8.0 Tire Dia. 25.7" Tread width - 8.07" Price ~$377@
215/70R15 Rim Recommend 5.5 - 7.0 Tire Dia. 26.7" Tread Width - 6.9" Price ~$365@
(prices are from sascosports.com)

I'm liking the 215/70R15 as it appears closest to the original tire size for my '63 (with 4:56 rear gear)

Good luck... GUSTO

6T2Vette:

You chose 225/65. Did they have other sizes? Such as 205/75?

How much did they cost?

Here are a couple of mine. Like Greg, I read a lot about them on the Cobra forums and have yet to read a negative thing about them, except price of course. No miles on mine yet, but soon. As you can see I tried a little stenciling on mine too! Don’t tell anybody.

I have had a set of CR6ZZ 205x15 on my 63 coup for 2 years and recently a set of 215x15 on my 67.
Expensive but absolutely fantastic tires. Will do more for your handling and stopping than any other mod.
The 215x15 were a little bit of a tight fit, shaved the inner fender lip to 3/8 inch front and rear, and went with 1 degree neg camber in the rear.

The price is all relevant. Ie; size, sales tax, etc.. I paid $1,760.00 out the door.
The store owner had a guy bring out three different sizes that would work on my '62. One was to tall, the other was smaller. I went with the one in the middle I believe the track is around 7.5".
The old tires on the car when I bought it were 225/70 15's.We didn't notice any rub, front or rear..

Thought you'd never ask.

What is the tread wear rating on these tires? I use them in auto crossing but those have a wear rating of 65. If you press your fingernail in the tread it feels like a piece of gum.
