Default pull motor - quick jack vs jackstands

so i'm starting my overhaul project which will require various work such as pulling the engine, as well as dropping fuel tanks and redoing the suspension components...

i've got a quickjack 5k and its excellent for routine work, but i'm thinking that it's going to wind up blocking a bunch of access from different angles for everything else i need to work on....

ive got some killer esco flat top jack stands (21") that would support everything and not block access from the sides...

i know the QJ will allow me to raise and lower the vehicle between the two stops, which should help when trying to yank the long block.... but i don't think ill be able to switch between jack stands and QJ during the process....

also the QJ has a max of 19" height with the 3" blocks.... the truck adapters only put me at 21", so i'm leaning towards the jack stands on this on

i've seen plenty of members work with both, just trying to think ahead before everything starts coming apart...

Never pulled an engine but I have done two clutch swaps (one in a C5 and the other in my C6) and used jack stands. I would think having access from the side for a lot of reasons would be the way to go.

If you decide to do it on jackstands this might help:

First, you need to decide how you're going to pull the motor, out the top or out the bottom. As someone who has done it both ways to make it easy on yourself you need to get super high or super low.
This is probably bias because I've never used a quick jack to pull a vette motor, but I think the quick jack would get too much in the way when sliding the front cradle back in. the more room the better to work the angles.
Also go to harbor freight and get you two wheel dollys for the front cradle it's a must for me.

Here are some pictures from both my methods in my 20x20 garage.

Going under

Bar has holes drilled in it for subframe bolts

Best things it the world

Going over, cars on pump jack all the way down.

Bar across to both sides of the cars jack up points, bolt installed at ends to go into jack up point frame holes.

Jackstands worked for me. Out the top left the front cradle and alignment undisturbed.

You have no imagination. Lift the car with QJ with your JS rest the car on them now reblock the QJ how much you like. Blocks of 4x4 or bigger timber works well

wow! i never thought it could come out the bottom on jack stands!!

there's some good info here, and i'd really love to use the QJ for this, i also think that i would like to be able to get under the sides instead of being blocked by the rails....

i'm leaning towards out the top with jack stands at this point..... will definitely be investing an a 2 post next year!

If your taking out the Transmission & torque tube taking it out the top and leaving the Cradle alone is a good way to go.
He just said pull the motor though not the driveline.
If you want to leave the transmission and torque tube where they are, like in my examples, dropping the front cradle is the fastest and easiest way. Especially when you put the motor back in. Nothing you unbolt to remove the front cradle will have an impact on alignment.

well i'm basically doing everything in one shot with the exception of brakes / transmission and differential work...

new control arm bushings / camber plates / ball joints / skf hubs / drm shocks... also new fuel pump...

i still need to talk to RPM about giubos on the TT, so that will probably be dropped as well...

looks like bendpak had the solution the whole time.....

truck adapters (stupid expensive) fit the 5k series perfectly and put the frame at just about 23 inches high...

looks like I won't have access from the sides but since this is looking like a solo project now, it will be nice to raise and lower without assistance.

these things are stout, no question I can tug and wiggle any part on the vehicle without any worry...

Bringing this thread back from the dead.

Were you able to drop the engine with quick jacks and truck adapters? How much height is needed?
