Default Fiber Optics - AND MORE, TOO!

Ok, another for the experts!

I’ve read through several FO topics here, but didn’t find the answer(s) I was after.

For those of you who have patiently answered my questions before, and any who have “followed” my progress / project…

I have the center gauge & shifter console & park brake cover out - amazing information already provided, with suggestions: oil line upgrade, clock->quartz retrofit, radio upgrade [RetroManufacturing w/ amp], parking brake repairs & cover repairs, tunnel insulation, etc…

So I’m in the home-stretch of reassembly:
  • Gauge cluster is in place - tentatively
  • Ammeter not yet hooked up - need to put DMM on it to make sure I don’t overload it [new alt & accy’s]
  • Park brake handle & front cable installed - switch tested & cleaned
  • Prep for tunnel install - working out rear dashcam cable routing while it’s all apart
  • I think you get the idea

The next piece to go in is the shifter console, so I’ve gotta get the FO reinstalled.

Here’s where it gets tricky…

The FO color-coding has mostly worn off, and tends to ‘stay’ where it came out of the ‘connector’ but I’d like to make sure the assignment is correct when reinstalling.

[Yep, I already posted about Wiring Harnesses, but the budget isn’t there yet - so im working with what I’ve got, and will use this thread for future reference.]

Back to the FO…
  • Misc. hardware bin had a tiny screw to hold the lens to the console - seems to be a common “missing part” (?)
  • The ‘connector’ had a nice lil ‘wow’ to it, so I heated & straightened it as much as it would straighten
  • 1/4” foam pads installed, with a Knipex hole-punch cutting clean, round holes for the FO lens - if that’s what’s done on the bulb end, why not try it out at the lens?
  • So which lens indicator is which?

If we look at the console, left-to-right, it’s:
LEFT LAMPS O O O || O O O RIGHT LAMPS
LEFT LAMPS 1 2 3 || 4 5 6 RIGHT LAMPS

1…?
2…?
etc…

Or maybe an easier question is:
Outside?
Middle?
Inner?

From previous threads I’ve read the FO’s indicate:
Turn Signal
High Beam
Low Beam

If I had tested this beforehand, this would be a write-up instead of a question - either way, hope this helps in the future!

Thanks in advance!

John

The easiest way is to have someone help you and point a bright flashlight at each taillight and license plate light and look at the end of the fiber optics cable to see which one is illuminated. One of them is usually bent from being in the assembly all these years, but the other two are easy to confuse. A flashlight makes it fairly error free to connect.

robertea,

Completely agree, but which are which for the front lens?
The rear is as important, but the front has to go together first.

I may have been editing while you replied.

Again, thank you for your diligence on the color wiring diagrams (it’s saved my OE shop manual from undue wear).

Ahhhh, you wanted the front also!! The flashlight trick can also be used for the front. If you are able to turn on your lights, the blinker indicators should be amber, but you can turn on the left and right blinker to figure out that part. Turning on your High beams and Low beams will separate those, but to figure out left and right you still probably want to do the flashlight test. I get my wife to help me do tasks like that. She isn't great with tools, but she is a car girl. She drives a BMW 135is that we picked up in Munich and then drove it on the autobahn. Got passed while doing 130mph by a Porsche that was probably doing 170mph. Couldn't catch him as her car is electrically limited to 150mph.

Hello,
Heres a note about the FO connectors for the head lights.
Originally there was a short rubber 'tube' inserted in each connector to help direct the light from the headlight to the FO cable.
They've often been lost but are pretty easy to replace.
Regards....

Alan,

Do you recall what size tubing is in pic#3 ?

It looks like 3/8”, with a thin wall.
Any suggestions for material and diameter?

I already tried <online vendor> parts, but they were just foam sleeves, and I think the inside diameter collapsed during install [this was about a year ago, so I’m open to new ideas while I trace out the FO connections in-car].

No need to shout, Alan!

I’ll look into that.

Since I’ve got 100-things going on at once, there’s a chance I’ll have some leftover 1/4” fuel line after plumbing the fuel pump / filter / vapor(?) lines.

Before it becomes a thing… the lines haven’t had fuel in them, and I’ll measure thrice and cut once. …unless the OD is too big …

Aaaand… the pump-filter-carb hard line is still in place. I’m not making some sorta fuel-line death trap by running hose all over the place.

So we’ll see how it works, and I’ll report back.

It takes a smaller line than 1/4 - probably like a 5/32 - I use vacuum line on my own cars. push it over the nipple on the back of the lamp and then ensure the optic aligns when plugged in,

SOLVED!

Owner’s Manual pdf courtesy of @robertea

Here: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...post1609686534

Although, I did take the advice in this thread, and checked for myself:
  • Park / Turn: Amber [Outer]
  • Headlights: Green [Center]
  • High-Beam: Red [Inner]

Solved.

Thank you all for the help!
