Default A c6 zo6 as my first car hear me out

my grandpa does auctions for fun and i had no clue until i got my permit that he’s got a clean c6 zo6 and offered it to me before he sells it im not much worried about insurance and cost i have a job and my parents said they’ll pay for some of the costs. but as a beginner any tips i think i can handle it cause as fun as it seems to push it i rather keep my car in good shape and grow with it then day 1 get into a run in with the cops or worse. side note i do love the c6 with a passion it’s probably one of my favorite vettes ever made and im blessed to get the opportunity to get one but i also wanna make sure i make the right choice. side note i have another car so im not mad about the space at all

It is not the right choice. In any way.

It pains me to write this because a few years ago, I would say, let the kid have the Z06 and get off his back. I'm an experienced driver and have driven many fast and capable cars. BMW's, Porsches, V10 R8's, GTR's, you name it. My Grand Sport, down 70 horse on the Z06, heavier, and less torque, can be a handful to drive as an inexperienced driver let alone a Z06. I know that you don't have the life experiences to understand this right now and one day you'll think back and it'll click but a Z06 is straight up DANGEROUS if you are not in tune with the car, have the muscle memory developed from thrashing slower cars past the limit and know how to catch a slide properly, have the experience to always be scanning road conditions and know to breathe off the pedal when it is slick or wet or there is grass clippings on the road. Until you have basic drivers instincts engrained in you, this car can get out of control quick. In the wet, it won't take much to make a HUGE, possibly life ending mistake. This is an old car, the electronic nannies aren't as good as modern cars and won't necessarily save you. Now that I got the PSA over with, I also believe in diving into the deep end to better yourself in just about everything. Meaning, if you buy this car, and are truly passionate about BECOMING A GOOD DRIVER, and are willing to put in the work to build skills carefully, you'll get better at driving just about anything. Except maybe lower powered stick shift cars that will take more finesse with the clutch but as far as driving dynamics, it will make you a better driver because you have to be to now die. The one thing that you absolutely should do right away is put good tires on the car. Aged out tires on a Z06 will kill you, simple as that. Rant over, good luck.

Just saw this too, can happen to anyone.

Your very first car? Maintenance alone will eat you alive not to mention fuel costs. Z06 is a LOT of car and will get away from you very easily even with the nannies if you're not careful. I would recommend you get a cheap daily driver (like a Honda) so you have something to drive while the Vette is taken apart to fix stuff.

Good luck and have (safe) fun!

Tell grandpa thanks, but pass on it for now. When I got my license ( March 25,1968, why I still know that date I cannot explain) my grandfather pulled into the driveway with a brand new yellow dodge convertible and tried to hand me the keys. I say TRIED because before I could even extend my hand, my father reached out and scooped them away from me, handed them back to his father and said thanks dad, but the kid can't have that car. WHAT! My father explained a couple of things to me. First I needed a car I could afford. Then I needed a car that I could bang up, scratch, and take apart to learn how to fix things without worrying about the value of what I was taking apart. I didn't talk to my father for about a month after that. Instead I ended up with a 1960 Bel Air that smoked so much when we started ti that the neighbors called the fire department. That car cost $75. But I learned how to take apart a chevy 6 cylinder and how to build it back up. I learned NOT to use steel wool to take off rust spots on the body. And I learned how to add a decent stereo. Four years later I bought my first vette. A 1967 convertible with hardtop and an extra set of mag wheels and tires. ( For $2450). The point here is that there will always be another car coming down the road, even if you can't see it yet. Make your mistakes on a clunker that is not only safe for you to learn on, but safe for the rest of us while you are learning. And if you heart is really set on something like this, make it your goal. Go take some high performance driving classes if you can, once you figure out the basics. I learned a lot from that one experience and it has served me well over the years. And I gladly share it with people just starting out. Thanks for giving me a chance to share it again. Good luck to you.

I completely agree one thing i know for a fact is i won’t be able to enjoy the car if i'm not living and im fully mentally prepared to honestly drive this car slow until i get comfortable in it because as fun as it sounds to get right into ripping it i know myself i don’t have the skill or experience to do that yet and im okay with that more then anything regardless of what car i get my priority is becoming a good driver also i would definitely be getting new tires immediately i live in Florida so i need that extra grip especially in rainy seasons

OP has to be trolling. My kids have been around all my performance cars their entire lives, & my teens know they shouldn't be behind the wheel of them with their limited skills & experience.

I trust my son (17) wholeheartedly, but he doesn't get to drive any of our vehicles that have over 500 hp - which is all of them except his '03 Wrangler

OP - you'll wreck that Z06 within a month no matter how slow or cautious you think you'll drive it.

It’s always the same song and dance on this question for new drivers. That is a lot of car for anyone and can get you in trouble quickly. I don’t know you or your personality but if you really think you can refrain from pushing the car I say go for it. We only live once. Good luck with your decision.

Bad Idea, more than one level.
What is your grandfather thinking?
What do mom and dad say?

I say go for it. I drove my share of “dangerous” cars in the 80s, not factory fast cars just hot rods we built out of 60s and 70s leftovers. Those cars had ZERO traction control, active handling, fat tires and most were death traps with tucked away seat belts. It boils down to the type of young person that you are. I always knew my limits and you should too. Whether you’re 20 something, 40 something or in my case 60 something, if you’re not smart you’re gonna get hurt.

You should be fine if you learn how to drive it.

Ask Gramps to hold onto it for you for about 5 years. He can let you drive it while he is in the pass seat. You might find out it is scary as hell or that it fits you like glove. BUT you should not be alone with it!

Wow. I would focus on grammar class and scratch the car for now.
