Delamination is a wide spread problem spanning the C6 to C8 generations. An above board help would be to establish designated shops that can repair or recover the dashes. I can understand why GM doesn't want to officially address the problem due to publicity. Maybe they can establish a more discrete mechanism to help owners. One solution would be to keep the leather dashes across all generation in stock in their parts inventory. Maybe a generic black leather dash to reduce to number of dashes necessary for th parts inventory.
It looks like the leather dashes have been made by three corporations, one corporation was to subcontractor for each generation; C6, C7, C8. So the problem is not subcontractor specific. I've read that the reason for delamination is that EPA rules prevent solvent based glues from being used. It appears that solvent based glues wouldn't have this problem (?).
Here's a Youtube video from a C8 owner who now has a massive problem. Fortunately, he's still in the warranty period. Notice at the very end he shows the entire car. It's a top dollar C8. Looks like a Z06 convertible. Carbon fiber steering wheel.
I got bit with delamination. My C6. After nearly 18 years..no problem. Then on a 70 degree day, I left the car parked in the sunshine. The heat caused delamination. Of course, I was getting ready to sell it until this occurred. Bottom Line. Get a reflector to cover the dash when parking.
With all the reported issues over the model years has there been any reports of folks taking an affected dash to an upholstery shop and getting a permeant fix? You would think that after all these years there would at least be be an out of pocket non GM solution…..
Seems crazy that Chevy can't resolve this permanently. I just bought a used 3LZ and according to service records they replaced the upper dash panels as part of the CPO inspection ... so I assume they were delaminating. I am somewhat worried since I have the Level 2 Carbon interior with red stitching so all the dash pieces have CF Trim and I'm sure they are $$$ ..
Too bad they dont ditch the real leather dash and just admit they can't get a vendor to do it right. I had 3 without one issue. My buddy had 2 and 1 went bad only 2yrs old and 3k miles. Crap shoot at best.
Yeah, It’s frustrating how widespread that’s been from the Chevrolet Corvette C6. The angled/peeling leather isn’t just a one-off issue. Your idea of GM supporting certified repair/recover shops or even stocking a universal replacement dash actually makes a lot of sense, especially for cars out of warranty.
