Default Steering column adjustment advice

I ran out of time at the shop before I could analyze this one. Got the steering column all back in but there's a gap of just under an inch above the housing. The bolts through the rag joint have a slot to locate them so that would not seem to be the issue. The "jacket" or tube seems to be the issue but there's not much room below. Obviously need to get this right before I tighten up the clamp, spring etc. I'll be going back out there toward the end of the week. Suggestions on the answer? Thanks!

It looks like there’s not enough shaft length into the rag joint. Looking at this pic. of the shaft, that bolt can go anywhere on the flat part of the splines.
So I would push the shaft into the rag joint so there’s a gap of around 1/4” before it touches the box.
Then loosen the bolts holding the U clamp under the dash and the clamp at the firewall and pull the outer tube up to meet the steering wheel boss. You need about 1/8th” there.

Thanks, I'll check that next time I am there. I "thought" there was a small groove which located the rag joint bolt on the shaft but my mind is full of stuff that ain't so!

From memory, that’s on the steering box input.

That's what I was picturing. The shaft just has a flat area, not a groove? So that's where the adjustment is and likely where I'm going wrong. I can see it in the pic you posted of the shaft. Thanks - I'm aiming for Thursday to do that.

You need to asemble the column and squeeze down the lower spring before worring about the rag joint.

Yes, you can do it that way, (it’s easier that way with column out) but it’s back in now, so it can be done both ways.
