Default Major Oil Leak - Engine needs to be pulled?

Hi - Picked up my 2023 Stingray in March. 7k miles. Took it to the dealership yesterday for the transmission filter change and tire rotation (normal 7k stuff). Heard from the dealer today that when they dropped the skirts, they found a major engine oil leak and they have to pull the engine to fix it. When I bought the car in Pa, it is listed as still having 7 months on the warranty (September). Come to find out from the local chevy dealer doing the work (bought the car at a Mitsubishi dealership), since the car was retailed in Ontario Canada the warranty may be different.

Long story short, the dealer told me they need to contact GM to sort it out and make sure it is covered. Not sure what my recourse is if they say it isnt. I am not mechanically inclined so just seeing if anyone else had this experience. Carfax was clean. Also, never any warning lights for oil. Thanks

If you have set up your mychevy account with the VIN for your car, you should be able to look there for the status of your warranties. I don't know if it is different if the car was sold in Canada, but it is that might also be reflected in what you see there.

Warranty in Canada:
  • Base Warranty (Bumper-to-Bumper): 3 years or 60,000 km.
  • Powertrain Warranty: 5 years or 100,000 km.

Here is a link to the Chevrolet Canada website, where you can access a copy of the warrant manual for a Canadian car.
https://www.chevrolet.ca/en/warranty
I was able to wade through for a 2023 Warranty Manual. Here is that link:

https://www.chevrolet.ca/content/dam...T02_2P-EN.pdf#

The wording in there makes it look like there could be an issue, but I am not sure. So yeah, they need to contact GM and maybe GM of Canada?

Warranty Applies
This warranty is for GM vehicles originally
sold new in Canada, registered in Canada and
normally operated in Canada. General Motors
of Canada Company warranty coverages
may be void or subject to restrictions on
GM vehicles that have been imported or
exported.

What do they mean by "skirts"? Define "major". Where are they saying the oil is leaking from? Absolutely no way any shop is doing any work on my car without me fully understanding the problem and the proposed fix.

That is the strangest dealer story I have ever heard. I would go to the dealer and ask them to show you what the hell they are doing.
I want to see it with my own eyes. OK, they will probably no customers allowed in the service area. Give them your phone and say take some pictures right now, explain it to me.

Agreed with above. I would want to see this for myself. If its a major leak like they claim, you should have seen oil on the floor. Possibly, are they calling a major leak something that requires a lot of work to repair, like removing the engine.

Agreed, would want to know more about the leak etc. That is an issue with the skid plates is that it could potentially hide leaks. Would think when oil levels drop to a certain level that the car will have a warning light, all other cars do. Let us know what happens. Good luck!

I would want to know the they have identified the source of the leak....if they can. Maybe they cannot tell exactly. I would assume its not the oil pan as that can be fixed without removing the engine. However, even replacing the tank on the front requires removing the engine. If from a valve cover, I think that can be repaired without engine removal (I did not check the manual though). But.....is there such a thing as a "minor" oil leak? I mean, if you remove the skid plates and there is engine oil on them or dripping from the engine, can that ever be "minor". It still needs to be repaired. I suppose one could check the oil level (as we are supposed to) and note whether there is a noticeable drop in oil level.....and maybe that could be the basis for a "slow" or "faster" leak...but a leak is a leak.

Update: Thanks so much for all the replies on my first post. Wow. Good news is the warranty will cover everything. Went to the dealer after work yesterday. They told me it was a leak around the pan. I did not see the comments until this morning. Based on your comments below I researched that a bit. And it appears that they should not have to pull the engine but perhaps move it around and maybe lower it? It is a Z51 which is a bit different from what I read as well. They told me it will be a couple of weeks. Hopefully that means no more then 2.

I will get an email to him asking to write out exactly where the leak is. As stated, not knowing much about the mechanical end maybe I translated differently. At the time I was more interested in making sure it was covered and not having to drop thousands of my own money to fix it only after driving it about 15 times!!
Thanks again.

How much time and miles are left on your warranty? You might want to think about extending it if you’re getting close to the end.

I found the procedure for the oil pan replacement. You do not have to remove the engine, but its non-trivial and you have to take a bunch of stuff out. This illustration is just part of it.

Update: Just got my car back today. Dealer had it since April 30th. Just started working on it last wednesday. Found a hairline crack in the oil tank. Here is what they did to replace it. 4 bolts, 4 seals, tank, tube, oil and filter. Was under warranty. Now my next battle is they charged $1100 for the DCT filter change. Went to GM on chat and the person told me the complimentary change is for 7500 miles or below. Mine had 7800 miles on it (was general at 7k on first post). I read in the forums that it could be 500 miles above. She told me that is not true. Missed it by 300 miles. I will try again to get a refund. Thanks again to everyone in the post for the insight!

Unless the rules have changed again you are eligible for the "free" DCT filter change once you hit 7,000 miles. There is no upper mileage limit to get the change for free although you may have to pay for an additional filter and a little more labor because you exceeded the 8,000 mile technical requirement. However, there is a time limit to claim your free DCT filter change, it may be 2 years or 3 years on a 2023, I don't remember. There is a copy of the letter floating around, maybe someone will post it.
