Default Rear main seal…

I have a 2005 c6 automatic. While I was getting an oil change the guy tells me I have a small rear main leak and it going to up to 4,000. To fix. I know it’s a big job. But I jacked the car you and pulled of that rubber oval plug and my fly wheel is dry even looks like light rust on it. My question is, if the seal was leaking, shouldn’t that flywheel have oil on it?

I would keep an eye on the garage floor for an oil spot. If it is leaking bad enough for the oil change guy to see it, it should accumulate on the garage floor over time.

That is a time-consuming repair for sure, the torque tube needs to be removed to gain access to the seal

That's why you have an oil dipstick.

Unless, you have oil dripping from the bell housing, how would the oil change guy be able to tell if you had an actual leak? Sounds like BS to me.

I used to have a 2002 C5 Z06. At 97K miles, I did a clutch change. Rear main seal had a slight seepage but not a leak. I left it alone and never had any problem.

Instead of the rear crankshaft seal leaking, oil might be leaking from one or more of the side bolts that secure the crankshaft main bearing caps to the skirt in the block. Those bolts are supposed to be sealed with silicone under the bolt head, so if that wasn't done, it would leak. A careful examination should expose the source of the leak.
