Default Buyer question - new to Corvettes

Hi folks, I'm looking at buying a 1968 427 T-top model that looks really good in the ad. I'm not a Corvette guy, I lean more towards Datsun Z's and Miatas (please forgive me! ) but this is my wife's dream car, and she deserves a good one.

Like I said, it looks good ... Except... Well just look... I've done a lot of work on cars, but never a Chevy, much less a Corvette. I've never seen a flywheel and torque converter open to the road. Is this just a cover part I can source fairly easily and fix?

I should add that the ad says it's a rebuilt Turbo 400 three speed if that makes a difference

Thanks in advance everyone!
Geoff

Ah, it looks like Jegs and Summit sell the covers for as little as like $50... All good then. Thanks all!

Hello JAN,
WELCOME!!!!
It's really good that you're thinking about a Corvette... especially a 68 427.
BUT, please don't judge a car based just on a advertisement.
A car might look good enough in an ad so that you want to make a trip to see it, but if you do, you should really take someone with you that is VERY familiar with 68-72 cars to help you know what you're seeing.
Believe it or not even though Corvettes have a fiberglass body the first thing to determine is "Is the car rusty or not". Corvette body structures and chassis are notorious for rusting.
A rusty car is one to stay away from!!!
But, lots of VERY nice 68-72 cars out there.
Do your homework to learn about the cars and how to buy one.
Good Luck!
Regards......

That is a dust cover that's missing and I'd bet not all Turbo 350's are the same when it comes to the dust cover. I found a dust cover for my 82 700R4 and while it almost fits it needs modifications to fit. As others have said if you can find a corvette club and get someone that knows C3's you will have much better luck.

Hello JAN,
If you'd be willing to start a new thread and post a link to the For Sale car you're looking at people will line up to give their opinions about the car and it's price.
The replies will run from "run as fast as you can" to "I'll buy it if you don't."
Regards......

If you have not done it already, I would read about the differences between a 1968 vs. 1969 thru 72. The 1968’s have a number of one year only parts with first year issues corrected in 1969. I would look at the 69’s thru 72’s. If you want a big block, they are available in all those years.

there's nothing on OE bbc or sbc block for an OE bellhousing to bolt to on bottom of block anyway
There's a full UPPER bellhousing that's cast integral to trans housing casting (just can't see it from that poorly lit photo angle).
poor shadowy photo, but trans pan looks like THM400
Regardless, What IS missing is an easily attainable stamped steel dust shield; outside of heavy winter ice & snow, they don't do much anyway.

It's missing a clutch pedal. You'll get sick of driving that car, and wish you bought something else.

It's hard to tell from one photo, but it looks like it hasn't been sitting in a field for 30 years, so you are above average on rust.

Post 107 in this thread shows the rust troublespots.

My concern is that for whatever this guy is asking for a big block 68 why wouldn't he spring for the $15-20 bucks for a used cover. Even a cheapo one. IF he is that way about something you can easily see, what about the stuff you can't see. Or the other stuff out in the open that a new corvette owner won't notice until somethign doesn't work correctly. ANd no apologies needed about owning a z, or more than one. I have 3 in my history and loved each one.

It's for his wife. She doesn't need a better car than what he'd buy for himself.

Lots of folks intentionally leave the dust cover off to promote cooling of the converter. Not a big deal.

It's a T-400 trans...not a T350. The trans itself is a tank and can hold tons of power.

This is what your missing should be easy enough to find one.Originals are metal,i believe the repro are plastic.350/400 trans are the same.
