Refreshing a 74 & replacement spare wheel/tire
FIL has a 1974 that him and the misses take out for short weekend drives but it needs some work before they trust taking it on longer drives.
I am going to put eyes on it for the first time next month so I will have more info then but I am trying to figure out what if anything it could need above normal maintenance.
Anything special I should know about for tune up? I'm thinking refresh all fluids, plugs, accessory belt, air filter...what else is common maintenance on these?
He also needs a replacement 15x8 rally wheel spare. AI came up with these parts for the mounting assembly and jack setup. Does this look correct? What's the best place to track these and the wheel down?
Any help or insight is appreciated.
Spare Tire Lock Bolt: The 1968-1974 specific lock bolt (Part #535029 / GM #3933819) is critical, as later years (1975-1982) use different lengths and designs.
Lock Bolt Hardware: A complete restoration typically requires the Spare Tire Lock Bolt Kit (Part #535007), which includes the rear lock nut, bracket, and bolt set for 1968-1974 models.
Front Carrier Bolts: Two front hanger bolts (Part #515013 / GM #3956389) secure the carrier tray to the frame, along with a jamb nut kit (Part #515112) for adjustment.
Spare Tire and Wheel: 1968-1977 Corvettes used a full-size spare on a 15x8 steel rally wheel (matching the road wheels), typically sized GR70x15 (equivalent to 225/70R15 or 215/70R15).
Retainer and Jack: A jack retainer with spring (Part #515021) holds the scissor jack in place, and a 1969-1974 scissor jack (Part #515086) is needed for operation.
Brackets: The spare tire rear lock bolt mounting bracket (Part #515015) and spare tire tray bracket (Part #515011) ensure secure mounting.
As far as regular maintenance, the brakes are a very common place where pre-'84 Corvettes need work. They're a great design but prone to seal leakage. The telltale is fluid on the inside of the wheel and tire sidewall.
Below is an assembly manual page for the spare tire carrier and hardware. The page is from '73, but '74 would be the same.

He did mention something about the brakes making him uneasy. I think he had a parking brake installed at a local shop a few years back and has had problems ever since. I'll do some more research here so thanks for the lead.
BR's post from the Assembly Manual should be a big help.
The jack is stored in a compartment behind the passenger's seat.
The spare tire and lock/carrier can be worked on with the car on the ground.
The lock is opened with a key.
The lock has a rubber boot on it but because of it's location it's often 'frozen'.
Some shots of something like WD40 even now might be wise.
Good Luck!
Regards.....
