Can you recommend an honest, secure self-storage place in Jacksonville for my son's truck and personal effects? He is supposed to go on leave on Monday to bring his truck home in advance of being deployed again in a few weeks. Now, he's going to be told on Monday whether he can go on leave, or leave early for deployment on Tuesday. There have been some reports of Marines getting their vehicles and stuff ripped off from crooked self-store places while deployed. Any recommendations of an honest and secure place would be appreciated. Semper Fi!
Not sure who your son is with here, but if he is a younger Marine, the best bet is for him to TMO his vehicle. This way the military handles all the arangements, and when he returns, his unit will schedule for the vehicle to be picked up. Why pay monthly rates when he rates this. Have him have his sncoic or oic talk to the "4" about this.
Is he on New River or LeJeune?
I have used a couple storage units in town. If he wants a storage unit he can park his car in, Uncle Bobs or Geiger Storage are both good. I used them both. If he just wants to park his car outside for the duration of his deployment, he can use TMO, but the car will sit out in a field for the time it is stored. The lot will be fenced in, but it is still sitting out in the elements.
I would just get a 10x20 unit and park my car in there. If the car isn't worth anything, TMO is a good choice.

The thing about TMO storing your car is you must have valid plates and proof of insurance to get your car back. Just keep that in mind if he drops insurance or the plates expire during the deployment.
Also, if he has NC plates and wants to drop his insurance to just fire/theft he has to turn his plates into the DMV. I know this because I dropped insurance on my vette when I deployed and didn't turn my plate in. I had to pay a 50 fine to renew my plates when I got back. This is different than I was use to, because in Ohio, you can drop your car insurance and still keep your plates on the car (for winter storage.)
