Rather unexpectedly, I find myself exploring a job opportuntiy in Lake Wales Florida. I know where the city is, but know nothing about it.
Can any forum members give me some insight into Lake Wales - population, demographics, housing, crime, etc etc. Not too concerned about schools - kids are all grown, but golf courses are important
Also, how do the mid-State citys tend to fare during hurricane season?
Uh, I hate to tell you this, but the Lake Wales area got hit with three hurricanes last year It's a little hilly and a lot of lakes, and orange groves, and just about smack dab in the middle between Orlando and Tampa. Come on down the winters are great!, and you don't have to put the 'vette away for the winter

Wow - I thought the inland cities would be spared from the hurricanes - yikes.
Thanks for the info - hopefully the employer will invite me down for round two

..... how BAD was the area hit by the hurricanes:
I am hoping the inland portions of Florida would be spared from severe damage.....
My G/F and I are seriously considering a move South of that area (Sebring ) next year, and although she spent 11+ years there (Tampa-area ) before, I've never been there, and I'm 'concerned' with the weather/hurricanes.
Hurricanes are what they are...in Central Florida we went years and years without even being touched...last year we had three come through...this year none...Katrina and Wilma all went south and didn't affect us at all...
If you buy on either coast you increase your risk but you also get to live on or near the water...you get to pay a lot more money too...it's a personal choice..to me it's not even discussable...I'll trade the occassional hurricane for a home in paradise every time...
