Default Antique Plates

I just got my antique plates for my '77. The holes are on top of the plates. The nut plates are on the bottom where they receive the mounting screws. Does anybody just drill the holes in the plate to make them fit? Or do I need to let the DMV know the problem here in VA?
Thanks

Either drill the holes, or go to BK and buy a set of period "correct" plates from the vendor out there - put 'em on your car and be done w/ it

Unfortunately, YOM plates only work for 1975 and 73 back (I sell them also ... 77 was a sticker year which DMV so far will not honor). If you have the white on black plates you would have to drill the bottom holes ... DMV does offer the blue on yellow 6 by 12 standard size plates which should bolt up correctly.

Thank you for the clarification - I appreciate it!
