THANK YOU GOD! Still for even better news to come...a complete recovery...
**Amen and Amen. God is good. You and the family are in our thoughts and prayers.
Mike ... thanks for the update. Good news indeed considering the circumstances. I passed the info along to some of Ricky's 'extended' family here at Surry Power Station who had asked on Donna's status (us nukes tend to be one huge family .... sometimes slighty dysfunctional but still close-knit). Kind of like Forum members.
As of today She is breathing on her own. They took the breathing tube out so they could start getting her to a point where they can get her a little more "alive". They need her less sedated and less druged so they can take the collar off her neck and get her heading in the right direction... They did a full body scan yesterday and we're awaiting the results there...
On the legal side, Liberty Mutual is the Insurer for the trucking company. Apparently they were trying to confirm that Donna wasn't going to die, and also trying to confirm with the State Trooper in charge of the investigation that the truck driver was at fauly. Gotta love those big insurance companies. Not sure if we'll have much of a "fight", since the trooper confirmed that the truck driver was grossly negligent. Ricky has a lawyer and we're going to move forward with Donna's best interest inmind. This woman's injuries are lifelong, and the cost to care for her for the next 30+ years will be extremely expensive. The house will require changed to accomodate wheel chairs, and the people who are relegated to them. The cars they own will need to be replaced with vehicles that can accomodate wheel chairs, and those people relegated to them. There is so much of day to day life that has been impacted for this family that is finally starting to be realized. All due to the negligence of one truck driver not paying attention to the 100,000 pound land missle they were piloting.

You hit the nail on the head with that one. People who drive those vehicles have got to have that fact pounded into them. It's basically a huge weapon in the wrong hands.
Still and thinking much about this event. I am still floored by those pictures, they will leave an indelible mark in my mind forever.
I just saw this! My G-D man what an emotional ride for all those involved. You and your family will be in our prayers. The power of prayer is immeasurable. As I remember you all had a scare last year that required some additional prayers and all ended up well. And now with all the prayers the prognoses sounds like it has changed for no chance of walking to possible. Lets all keep praying!
Mike,
What can we do to help besides pray? You only live around the corner from us PLEASE don’t feel like you are imposing or be to proud to ask for help. This is what friends and neighbors do for each other not because they have to or because it is the rite thing to do but because we want to. My wife bakes a mean ziti! Let me know if we can drop this off? As it was already stated, you your wife and brother need to eat and stay healthy and strong so you can be there for Donna. I understand that immediately following a tragic event sometimes we are inundated with offers of help and as the days and weeks go by the help is harder to find. Please know my offer is always on the table.
God continue to bless Donna and the other persons directly and indirectly involved.
Adjusting to life wheelchair bound will be difficult but not impossible. Not sure if you met my brother at the track, but he's been wheelchair bound his entire life since being born with Cerebral Palsy.
It's been an interesting road for my family, sure things might be "better" if we didn't have to deal w/ the chair... but you adjust and get trough.
I met a wheelchair bound C5 driver at a car meet a few years back.... he had hand controlls for his auto C5 and could drive it fine. He always had to have a buddy riding shotgun to put his chair in the coupe hatch after getting in the car... it was pretty
We hope to have her moved out of CCU and into her own private room by the weekend. They were contemplating a tracheotomy, but the congestion in her lungs has finally started to break up, and the swelling around her neck has started to go down, so breathing isn't as hard.
Hopefully she'll be off the breathing tubes/ feeding tubes by the weekend as well.
She ended up having the tracheotomy, but she's also able to move around a bit better, and communicate with her husband via writting for the first time since the accident over two weeks ago... Donna told Ricky she's scared, but she'll be OK, and will pull through it, and she asked him to stay the night with her in CCU... It broke our hearts, but also lifted our spirits to hear this... We're going to visit on Sunday and we are hopeful she'll be able to be in her own room by Sunday...
