IIRC, you want that driver's license BEFORE you close on the house. Otherwise, you won't be a resident and you will lose out on your $25,000 homestead exemption at least for the first year.
Talk to your realtor about it. It could be that as long as you get it in the 30 days, you can still apply for the homestead exemption. Since you are closing in May, you may not have an issue.
If you close on one in December, there are a lot of hoops to jump through to be sure you are really living there and all so that you aren't just snagging a free year in there.
Not to start an argument but I closed while I was still living in Houston a month before I moved and had no problem filing for the homestead exemption.
