Well guys, I got home today from Fort Lee. I took the liberty of talking to a recruiter extensively for the past week and a half and I believe I am making the right decision. As of today, I am in the Marine Corps Delayed Entry Program. My scheduled ship date for boot camp isnt until October 23rd, but I might leave earlier than that. The MOS I had previously decided on was Air Crew, which is basically an In-Flight technician that also has other duties that include Small repairs on both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, and controlling the .50cal on the aircraft. But, I am having second thoughts about that and I might change it to Amphibious Assault Vehicle Operator. Which is driving any of the Amphibious Assault Vehicle's that the Marine Corps has to offer. Anyway, I just figured I would give everyone and update and I will keep you updated as I get closer to my ship date!!
Congrats on getting in. My only advice is before you finally choose a career path, do extensive research and make sure it is the one you want. Personally, I would go with the amphib pilot...nothing like a little fun in the water...of course on the other hand you have the .50 cal.

Yeah, I decided the navy wasnt the way to go for me. And the amhpibious assault vehicle operator isnt actually in the water. I found out it was just called "amphibious" because they come from the water and then do their work on land. I dont completely understand it, but whatever. And the .50 cal wouldnt have anything on the firepower the M1 Abrams put out!!
I'm disappointed...didn't even talk to my Air Force...
Haha, well its not the Branch of Service that matters, it's the act of serving that matters. BTW, my uncle is a retired Colonel from the Air Force and I can assure you that he will be disappointed as well.
Congratulations on deciding to enlist. This is not an easy decision with today's world events. Of course being a retired sailor I have to give you my good ole standard "The only good Marine is a submarine"! Really though I wish you nothing but the best and I hope you make the best of your time in the service. You can have a lot of good times in the service even though once you start boot camp you will be wondering why did I do this?

I'd suggest being an LAV crewman (0313) if you think being an AAV driver would be interesting. Plus the only school for it is in Cali, no Camp Lejeune...

Haha, thanks for the words of encouragement. I just told my boss today and was expecting a lot worse of a response than what I got. Everyone in my office was relatively happy for me (other than the standard "I still cant believe you are leaving us"). I cant wait until October, but I dont want to rush it and go before I am physically and mentally ready.

Thanks for the advice. I will definately check that out with my recruiter as one of my options. I was just thinking I would rather keep my feet on the ground (or as close to the ground as I can get!) . I will keep everyone updated!
I spent many years in aviation and it has been a great time. A crew chief is a plane captain and mechanic first.
Swing with the Wing baby!
Or better yet, get your college degree and then be a pilot.
Thanks Fast! I agree that I chose the "Right" service, lol. I was planning on going Air Crew, but like I said, I might change my mind soon. I was also planning on getting my college degree while in the service and then going to OCS. We will see what the coming years have in store for me!
Thanks Vic. I went to an all day training excersize yesterday. We were trained on how to use the M-16 A2 and how to disassemble and reassemble it. A little hand to hand combat training and also the different shooting positions and what they are best used for. All that along with a bit of running and a lot of push ups! SEMPER FI!!
From: Hampton, VA Yea, i'm a redneck... but you love it

Matt, congrats. Looks like we will be leaving at the same time. So did you get to stay at the little hotel and everything? Still riding with someone up to the speedway?

Hey Doug! You leave October 23rd too? Yes sir, I got to stay in the hotel. The food was horrible, but the pool was nice. I only got about 3 hours of sleep that night, too. Then spent most of the next day in my skivvies with 8 other guys. Sometimes in nothing at all with Dr. Rosa looking at my male reproductive organs lol. I think I might ride up with Joe and then ride around the track with you.
