This will be our first trip in the Vette. My wife and I are wanting to stay in the Clearwater area but don't know where a good place to stay is or if there is a better area where there are not as many tourist. We are planning on going around the middle of August.
We know it is going to be hot we live in N.C. and go to Florida at least once a year but it is usually family oriented.
So any suggestions on the Gulf side would be greatly appreciated along with some great routes to take.
One of my favorite places is Shephards in Clearwater. They have a "happening" night spot and the Sunday brunch is to die for. Go to www.shephards.com and check them out. At that time of the year they should have some good deals. Otherwise just google Clearwater, Florida and look for motels in that area. They have completely redone the beach area and most of the "Mom & Pop" motels are gone.
You might consider driving just a little furthur to St. Petersburg Beach and staying at the Tradewinds which is moderately priced or the Don Cesar which is more expensive but world class place with great history. Both are on the Beach and I find the beach On St. Petersburg Beach more inviting than the Clearwater area IMO. Have fun.
PS: If you go to St Pete Beach, you must eat at the Sunday brunch at the Don Cesar. It is awesome and worth the expense. Also, go to the Hurricane Restaurant for great Grouper sandwiches, etc. The top floor at the Hurricane is great to see the sunsets and chase down a few mudslides!!!!
If the Rays are in town, you'll be a 20 minute ride away from the Tropicana Fields and MLB.Enjoy!!!!
Thanks for the suggestions so far. I think Shepards would be great if I were single but from the looks of some of the pictures I may end up in trouble.
We are open to anywhere along the Gulf side. My wife use to go to Long Boat Key as a child that was another idea and she has family that lives in Port Charlotte. We are just wanting some where to relax with plenty of places to eat and hopefully see some Corvettes.
It's out of season and the rates should be fair. I love Captiva & Sanibel Islands, which would put you close to Port Charlette.
This is a link to where we stay. Check and see if you still get the free breakfeast at Key Lime Bistro http://www.captivaislandinn.com/
