Deals Gap Help Needed
Hey guys
Being a flat lander from Florida with damm few mountains ( ok speed bumps )
I get jealous reading about all the fun you have playing in the mountains, specifically Deals Gap. Soooooo since I will be going to C I 3 this year, I plan on taking some extra time to run the Gap on the way home. I would really appreciate any tips, ideas, routes, info, links, cautions and the like. I plan to leave BG Sat afternoon, drive to Knoxville, spend the night then do the Deals Gap run Sunday morning, then head home to Fla. Of course if anyone would
care to join us, we would love to have you. post here or drop me an EM if you are interested. That would be Sunday May 26,2002 .... Jim

Hey FastMover, Your going to love Deals Gap, Best run east of the Rockies.
311 curves in 11 miles, with no intersecting roads, watch for the cycles, they rule at the gap, lots of 5 mph curves so take it easy the first time. Here's the site for Deals Gap. Good Luck http://www.dealsgap.com/images/map/DRAGONMAP.gif :seeya

Re: Deals Gap Help Needed (FastMover)
We ran it last year. Best advice is to run it several times (it's only 11 miles) so you get better at it. Put it in 2nd gear and leave it there for the entire run. Be careful of the motorcycles, their wheels may be on their side of the yellow line, but their helmets may be on yours. There are quite a few accidents and occasional fatalities.
The Gap is GREAT. I've run it about 6-7 times now. Like others have said, leave it in 2nd or 3rd for the run, watch out for the two wheelers, and watch out for the LAW. These guys have started getting pretty tough up there...basically any "performance" driving can be considered racing with lots of fines and points. You won't regret taking the time. And, if I can suggest after leaving the gap, don't head straight for the interstate go get back to FL...hit the north west corner of GA. We've got some great roads here too (we've got a route we call the Snake). Not as intense as the gap, but almost as much fun.
COOL PLACE TO GO NEVER BEEN THERE IN MY VETTE BUT I HAVE ON A MOTORCYCLE AND ITS WILD BUT TAKE IT EASY UR FIRST TIME , THOSE CURVES HAVE WHIPPED OUT A LOTTA PEOPLE INCLUDING ONE OF MY FREINDS SO JUST BE SAFE AND HAVE FUN ITS SOME NICE SITE SEEING
Sunday morning is NOT a good time to twist the Dragon's tail! That's when all the crotch-rocket riders from Knoxville splatter themselves all over.
If you just gotta do it, drive it once at a very moderate pace (to get accustomed to the twisties), then turn around and go for it!
FYI: Florida drivers are a standing joke around the Gap. Most of them drive the mountains like they've never seen a curve before! (No flame intended).
A BEST BET: Pick a place with a picnic table on the INSIDE of a curve, then kick back and watch the boy racers. Wait for a gap in traffic and walk to the outside of the curve...I guarantee you'll find pieces of *** bikes!

If coming from knoxville stop at the south end of the Dragon at the Deals Gap store/motel, lots of good pixs on the walls. Then go back thru and find a good place to pull over and watch for a while. Great trip!

   Sully & I have been to Deals Gap. :) We had a great time. :yesnod: :yesnod: You will really enjoy the ride. :yesnod: :yesnod: However; you will have to watch for the slow drivers and the bike riders.   Unfortunatelly there are just a few places to pull over while on the gap.
So be careful, have a great time and check out our webpage for more info and pictures of Deals Gap.
Everyone's comments are on the mark. Deals Gap is a blast, however, it is also dangerous. We came around a blind corner one time & there was a car in our lane headed right for us; good thing the Vette has great brakes. Another time we came around a corner & there was a pickup pulling a boat. The pickup was OK in the other lane, but his boat trailer was 2' into our lane...evasive action required.
Like other's have said, take a couple of passes to get a feel for the road. Also, limit the aggressive driving for areas where you can see clearly ahead' on blind corners, take it slow.

BTW we may join you. :yesnod: It is a lot more fun if you have other Vettes joining in. Quote
Sully, we would be honored to have you and Mrs sully join us, as you say the more the merrier. In fact would you be interested in helping me organize this run and possibly a cruise from BG to Knoxville either Sat afternoon or Sunday morning. Any Ideas?? Jim :jester :jester
Jim... I think there could be others interested in joining a Deals Gap run during &/or after CF-III. Since you have the idea, why not start a thread in the National Events Section regarding a Deals Gap / CF-III cruise & see what the feedback is. It is ~5hrs from BG to Deals Gap, so it could be a day run or an over-nighter to Knoxville.
