Default Best BBQ in Memphis

I will be in Memphis on 3/20/2009. Who has the best BBQ in Memphis. I am not looking for the fanciest place, just the best food in town. I dont care if it is a run down hole in the wall place, the look of the restaurant has no effect on me at all. Let me know what is out there and where it is located.

Thanks,

I have not been to Memphis in probably 8-10yrs (grew up there) so I'm not sure how the neighborhood is anymore, but this is one of the best BBQ places in town.

Where to find the "best" Memphis BBQ will vary significantly based on who you ask. We all think the BBQ we grew up with is the best, so it's a highly subjective question.

That said, I grew up eating Leonard's BBQ in South Memphis at Bellevue and McLemore, so that was always my favorite spot. It has closed now, but is open under new ownership at some other locations I haven't tried.

I haven't eaten there in years, but I used to like to get to-go orders at Payne's at 1762 Lamar. It's not a great part of town.

Rob mentioned BBQ pizza at Coletta's. I guess that's a local specialty and I like it pretty well. When I'm going to take out-of-town folks to eat BBQ pizza, however, I always go to the original location at 1063 S. Parkway. It's not a great part of town, but they have security in the parking lot. Tell them you want to eat in the room where Elvis always sat when he came for BBQ pizza. There will be pictures of him on the wall. Graceland isn't too far away, if you are interested in that kind of thing.

The dry rub ribs at the Rendezvous are world-famous and I enjoy them and the atmosphere at the downtown restaurant in an alley near The Peabody Hotel, where it's fun to watch the ducks march into the lobby to the fountain each morning and then back to their rooftop quarters each evening.

I also like the ribs at B.B. King's on Beale Street, although the draw there is the music and the atmosphere, rather than the food.

When I have a craving for BBQ, I'm most likely to go to Corky's on Germantown Parkway or Poplar Avenue, the Germantown Commisary at 2290 S. Germantown Rd., Jim Neely's Interstate BBQ at 2265 S. Third or The Bar-B-Q Shop at 1782 Madison.

Some people swear by Central BBQ at 2249 Central.

The bottom line is that you could spend a month trying all of the BBQ in Memphis, the BBQ capital of the world. Bon appetit!

I loved Memphis in May when I lived there! The music fest and BBQ fest was the greatest! I had several buddies that worked the BBQ fest, so I got to try out a lot of different BBQ. Man I miss that place sometimes!
