First time over here in the SE section. I have a few questions for you people. :D
I am thinking of moving back to the "Mainland". I was almost ready to close a deal on a house out here and then a sudden warm wash of common sense overwhelmed me. I did a quick comparison and found that I could get a bigger, better built house on a much larger lot in Orlando. Like 1/4 the cost!!!!
For what I could get in Orlando (6-700k) it would cost me 2-3mil. (Save the rich guy comments please). The schools here in Hawaii suck (private is a must). The space is very limited. Parking sucks. Speed limit sucks. I have to get up @ 3am every day to trade, blah, blah ,blah. But it is Hawaii!! :D :D
Anyway ... I have three girls 13, 8, and 6mo and my wife is from the Philippines (she love it here in Hawaii ... almost like home). I would appreciate very much any opinions on the Orlando area. Good and especially bad. I have PEACH working on some things and would like a little input.
You better like tourists...ooh uh, er wait a minute you're in Hawaii. Nevermind that one. With my job, and Corvette shows I'm in O-Town about every 2-weeks or so. Tampa/St. Petersburg is about an hour(C5 speed) to the SouthEast. I'm sure you would get more bang for you're buck in Orlando.
Of course as pretty as Florida is...Orlando is no Hawaii. It's all pros and cons
I guess. I'm sure more Orlando peeps will check in with their ops. Would love to have ya as Florida 'Misfit'...
nomercy--I lived in orlando for a while but hated it. the traffic was bad, bad, bad. but then again, I don't like big cities to begin with. I'm 27 and single so I couldn't tell you about the school situation there. the area is growing very quickly--I still go there once per week and am amazed at the progress. you're close to one of the nicest airports in the country, several great beaches and all of the major attractions. the tourists are difficult to deal with sometimes. if you're able to spend 6-700k, you should maybe consider isleworth/windemere area--they're much nicer than mainstream orlando but not too far from everything.
Orlando and most of central Florida is about 30 years behind the rest of the country when it come to most things. The do not even have synchronized traffic lights YET, something California did in the 60's. NO freeways except I-4 and a couple of toll roads that back up at the toll booths big time. BUT it is Floriduh. Just set your watch back thirty years. and you will blend right in! :jester
If I have to go to Orlando for a meeting, I'll make sure it starts late enough so I miss morning rush and\or ends soon enough to miss afternoon rush. Actually, Rush Hour is a misnomer. It lasts far longer than an hour, and there is no "Rush" involved.
I don't like much about Orlando except for the great corvette shows and owners. Other then that I'll stick to the St Pete/Tampa area. Public schools in this area aren't the best thou.
Purerock, Tourists?? Oh yes black socks with shorts, a funny hat and cameras ... yup I've seen a few out here. :D :D Thanks!!
Red Gump, Windemere is exactly where I was looking. I moved out here from Denver about a year ago and am very familiar with the "city too big for the road network story". Thanks!!
silvervette, Well out here they have started photo radar vans. There is no margin for error. 1 mph over and you get a ticket. The camera van company is paid by the ticket ...  this is an election year and ... lets just say I do not think they will last. Thanks!!
RedHot, I am fortunate enough to have an office in my home. No commute for me :D. The only place I "have" to go is to the gym. It is beginning to sound like traffic does suck there though. Thanks!!
Springer, Hmm I was thinking about the Tampa area as well. Is the traffic as bad there as it is in Orlando? Thanks!!
Traffic can be bad in both places.. but I don't think tampa/St pete is as bad as orlando is. Almost everytime I travel I-4 through downtown Orlando, there is an accident.
I know Windermere, grew up in O-town.....really cool small "town" and gorgeous area :D.....quick, and FUN backroads access to the disney area and great boating along the Butler Chain :D
then there's the MISFITS :D:D:D
we'd love to have you down here, Sully is moving soon and there are already SO MANY members in the area.
besides, we could all use a little investment advice, and I mean that seriously :)
NOMERCY....
Well I have lived in O-Town for the last 15 years....let me just say that although everything the others said is true, there are ways around everything....as far as traffic, I live in a town called Oakland, it is at the Turnpike and Hwy 50 intersection and I work in Maitland when I am in town...that commute takes about 35 minutes in the vette in Winter and maybe 25 in the summer....(No Snowbirds here in the Summer) but if your working from home.....Your set.....Schools....that is as well an issue, however there are some excellent private schools in this area. Now on to the Vettes....I gotta tell you..there are some of the best bunch of Vette owners in the Country in this area...and that includes Everyone from Jacksonville to Stuart and the west coast as well. In Orlando we have the Central Florida Corvette Association....The Largest NCCC organization in the state with over 150 members.....If you are serious and it sounds like you are, I think you will truly enjoy life here....and with the money you are considering spending you could really build yourself one nice estate out in the area I am in...Whatever you do....All the Best.....
I think if a person had money and did not have to comute to work, Life in Orlando would be a lot easier. It is easier to sit in traffic when you are not in a hurry to get someplace and can do thing on you own schedule..

great meeting you this weekend Neal(?sp)....had a great time and really like the custom work on your engine bay :D
Mean Green, The though of being a misfit is appealing. As far as investment advice ... most of my action happens in anywhere from minutes to a few days. By the time I find something I am already trying to get out. I would say right now by some good tech funds and hold on!!!! E-mail me if you have any questions.
Pure MC2, Thanks for the info!!
silvervette, I have some advantages that others do not. Not sitting in rush hour is a big one. Thanks!!
BTW what is the emission situation there in Fla. We have no emission rules in Hawaii and my car is being built with that in mind.
This has been a great thread for me too. I am also in the process of considering relocation to the Orlando area. The traffic comments are quite interesting as I live in metro Atlanta, and this is a MAJOR headache for me. Anyone who's seen both cities? Can you comment?
I've been both places often and Orlando weekday traffic isn't as bad as Atlanta (Atlanta is just down right miserable during the week) :smash: Orlando traffic is just heavy most of the time.. even weekends cause of all the tourists, etc.

I wil and thanks .......no emissions testing down here :D
Springer... It is not the tourists, It is the lack or freeways and their antiquated traffic light system. Ever wonder why we have to sit at a red light for a CLOSED shopping center at 2:AM? DUH! Their answer for everything is another non synchronized light or a slower speed lmit. :mad
I was in Orlando the other weekend.I didn't encounter any bumper to bumper traffic, but the people drive so wild.If you don't know where you are going exactly it can get rough.I was driving my friends Lincoln town car. That thing is a boat.I will feel a little more comfertable when I go back next time.
Also the road outside my motel off of Orange Ave. must have been the Orlando ricer drag strip. All night squealing tires and angry honeybee sound.
I've lived in the orlando area for about 18 years, granted I'm only 19, but still :D Anyways, Orlando has its pro and cons, theres many small towns just outside of orlando, like lake mary, longwood, alt. springs, casselberry, maitland, etc., that don't have nearly as much traffic or mayhem, but are in easy access of downtown Orlando. The "green way" paid with the toll booth infested road used to bypass I-4, at the right times, is a great and quick way to get where you want to go. I believe seminole county has some of the best schools in the state, but with each school providing unique programs...Take a look at seminole high school for the national medical program, lake mary high school with a outstanding AP program, etc. If you move down here, I wish you the best, so far I've enjoyed being a Floridian :yesnod:
