Basically you need a car with cats on it because they will visually look for it. It will need to pass the sniffer test.
I believe when you registered the car in the state, you will pay what they call a highway use tax that is like 2 or 3 percent of the cars value. 30 dollars for a set of tags.
taxes will run you about 500 dollars a year depending on where you live at. That is what i paid this year on a 08 Z in Johnston county.
Yeah you just need cats and theoretically a stock engine emmsissions setup. They don't do the tailpipe sniffer and many don't do a visiual just scan and out the door. It's a nice area depending where you live, although I know nothing about the corvette community yet (just recently got my '79).
There's a big Corvette contingent in the RDU, some very active clubs and good events. Easy drive to the coast and a little more to the mountains. Got to have those cats showing at the inspection station. Depending on your tint, you may be able to add more (32% VLT max) or you may have to take off what you have and go to a more conservative value.
Think you'll find RDU an enjoyable place to drive your Vette - less road rage than the left coast. I can attest to that from trips to your state last year and Vette rentals. WOW!!!!
NC is super easy for inspections. 35 years and older, no inspection needed. 95 and older, just basic safety inspection, and 96 and up they just plug in. I haven't had a cat on any car that didnt' have a computer since i bought them. You can get away with almost anything. Way better than California. My cousin got pulled over in his 78 trans-am for suspected modified exhaust when it was still the stock original rusty one. I ran open header for a few days here when i was waiting on my new exhaust, no problems. Only thing most places actually care about is window tint. that's about it. It's a great place
Emission is via the ODBII port. No probe. No more window emission sticker either. Annual plates are $33.
You do pay an annual road tax based on NADA/ Blue Book value of the car ~ 2.0% I believe. Will have to pay title, "road tax" and transfer fee when you register.
Read the drivers license book and be prepared to answer questions like how to stop a truck on ice while sliding down hill You do get your license the same day! No waiting as in Ca
Hell of a lot better than Kalifornia. Hell of a lot worse than Ill.
