I am planning a trip to the outer banks and will be coming via TN and NC. I am considering taking 421 from Johnson City, TN to Winston Salem. The other option is 26 to 40 east. Opinions? By the way, if it matters, the vette is not going. Thanks for all responses.

I-40 is open now so you'll have a straight shot. 421 is a great road too. Are you going to be on the north end (Duck & Corolla) or the southern end?

Duck. I am avoiding VA because I always get a ticket there.

421 to 40, 440 on the other side of Raleigh to 264, and 264 to 64. There are other ways, but that keeps you out of most trouble.

Coming from the Indianapolis area looks like you'll be hitting 75 if you want to avoid VA and 77. In that case, 40 all the way to Raleigh is best. 40 east is open 2 lanes along the slide area. 40 west will have a 3 mile stretch of 1 lane only for a few more months

421 between Bristol and Boone is great fun in a Vette, but in anything else, its just slow travel. And its a popular cruising spot for bikers, so its often patrolled on the weekends, FYI.

421 is a blast, and the drive by lake Watagua is a site to see. If you have an extra hour, to go out of your way, checkout perhaps one of the best roads in the world, NC221 between Linville and Blowing Rock, amazing.
