Careful on VA I-81
Came across this a few days ago. VA raised the limit to 70 on I-81 (good news). Bad news? Going 11 over can net you a reckless. Following is a cut-n-paste ...
"Virginia Reckless Driving Ticket
Virgina is cracking down on excessive speeding, especially in Fairfax County on the Dulles Toll road and Wythe County.
If you are cited for 20mph over the speed limit or at a speed greater than 80mph then you may be facing the very serious charge of reckless driving. In Virginia this is a criminal violation and a mandatory court appearance.
The judge has the option of fining you up to 2500 plus one year in jail. Jail time is unusual but does happen, especially if your speed exceeded 100mph. They will put you in cuffs and you will go straight to jail.
You should always contest a VA reckless driving charge. If there were no other issues during the traffic stop, most Virginia courts will reduce the violation to a simple speeding ticket. However this still carries a stiff six point count with the possibility of a major increase in you auto insurance and a fine in the neighborhood of $500. If you are a VA driver, you will be subject to the reckless driving $1050 surcharge payable to the VA DMV on top of the court fine if the judge does not reduce.
We strongly recommend that you retain a Virginia lawyer for any major speeding or traffic violation but especially if you receive a VA reckless driving or DUI citation. A Virginia attorney can represent you at your arraignment and can usually negotiate for you so you do not have to appear in court. No one can guarantee what will happen in court and we cannot guarantee that you will be satisfied with representation from the Virginia attorneys we recommend. However, we have verified each firms reputation and have received positive feedback ... "

Makes you want to move to Montanna. I've been doing some reading ... It's not good. The "red light cameras" can be switched to "speed on green" and it's a well known secret that shaving 1 - 2 seconds off the yellow timing ups the revenue generated by 110% ( need to verify to be totally sure om that one ). Already the VA intrersections with red light cameras are at the lower limit of the allowed time set by the Federal Highway Admin. Is all about the bucks *… and it won't change till people speak up. * Gawd - I'm starting to sound like a malcontent.*
Ok - I feel better now

Got nailed!
Was heading for Florida on the 13th and got stopped on I-77 in Wythe County and got charged with Reckless by Speed. I have to go to court, does someone know of a good lawyer in this area that will represent me? I am from Ontario so I would rather not have to travel down again for court. Thanks

I don't know if these guys can help - but there are links to legal pros that offer speeding ticket help and representation - these folks are in VA but the site has info for all 50 states.

Bluff City TN just outside of Bristol TN put up the speed trap cameras and in the first month made 80000 dollars in fines. Radar dectors have been illegal to use in VA since the eairley 70s.

Radar in Va.
Virginia State and some County cops now have Radar Detector Detectors!! Even Valentine is not immune to them. Only one that is totally undetectable is a unit made in Canada ( forgot the name). Spending our tax dollars to catch you using them

Go Virginia! I for one am tired of bully, non-caring, self-centered drivers who think they are right to tailgate or drive any speed they want. It's a friggin zoo out there. It's anarchy. I choose to bey the law and drive safely for my sake and that of others. It's a privilege, not a right to drive. I didn't understand that concept as a kid. I do now.

No one is talking about running nuns over in crosswalks. The point of the post is that 11 over on I81 (in fact ANYWHERE in VA - over 80 mph) nets you reckless. It's designed to make the state money. Plain and simple. Folks wishing to move slower need to be in the right lane as we were all taught in drivers Ed.
