I've hit the point where California is too crowded, too expensive, high taxes and just plain crazy. The Terminator really screwed this place up worse than it already was.
I need to get out and we're thinking of Georgia. Roswell, Cumming and other places around the Atlanta area. Just getting a feel for the Corvette community out your way.
How would a California transplant fit in? I need to get out of here!!!!!

I grew up in San Jose CA. Iv'e lived here in the south since 1986, FL. VA. and now TN for the last 11 yrs. You'd be fine out here unless you make fun of the accents. I'm about 2 hrs north of Atlanta, there are some local corvette clubs around but I'm not a member at this point.
I'm in Lincoln 20 miles NE of Sacramento. I lived in Walnut Creek, Concord and San Ramon... Like everywhere else, too too crowded
I grew up in New Jersey, went to Texas for the Air Force so I know about accents.... I hear the area is really nice and beautiful. Hope my wife buys in ......
Thanks

The area is beautiful, the mountains aren't as rugged as out west but beautiful just the same, humidity in the summer can be a killer though.
I couldn't stand the traffic in San Jose, way too crowded. California has some beautiful mountains and beaches, just the cost of living there and the tax till you die mentality, the constant rules and regulations on every little thing. When I joined the Navy I went to FL. and never looked back.
Well good luck to you whichever way you decide to go.
That's the thing I would miss the most. California is beautiful and I can drive to what ever climate I want within 3 hours. Lake Tahoe, Carmel, Mendocino, I can go on and on.
You would like the Cumming, Dawsonville, Dahlonega area. Not too crowded, hills and even mountains depending upon which town you choose. It's forested, green, and the weather is a bit nicer than in the metro areas like Roswell, Marietta, etc.
We have a number of Corvette clubs and do lots of gatherings, car shows, cruises, etc. Kiss California goodbye and come on over.
Roswell is one of my fav towns in ga. I lived there for years. I'm out on the west side where I gre up now.
Lots of transplants in atl you'll be fine at any of the areas you are looking. Roswell is quaint old town but nearby malls and close enough to the city and buckhead if you want that kind of thing. Cumming is further out in the country, a bit of a drive to the city but closer to the hills of north ga. Marietta is not as nice as it used to be. It's old money in east Cobb county now. Just not my fav area any more and I have a lot of relatives there.
If you want country close to the city look at the west and sw areas, villa rica, temple out I20 Newman and peach tree city down I85 all still close to atl but lots of rural area too.
Thanks for all your info. I'm really not into the city thing. I only know about Roswell from a friend of mine that lives there. Shoot me some more options so I can Goggle and also look at real estate.

Thanks all, looking forward to low key living
Give us some of what you are looking for like...
- Near a big city or not
- Big government county or rural
- Acreage or standard lot
- Near the mountains and woods or doesn't matter
- Cooler or warmer temperatures
- Other things important to you

Not really into the big city thing, nice to visit now and then though. Nothing too rural but don't want to be able to look in my neighbors windows, maybe 1/3 acre. Mountains or woods works just fine for me. Nothing too too hot and minimal rain totals.
I'll tell ya, just want a nice low key place to settle down with my wife and enjoy getting together with new friends..
SoCal tranplant here - much lower cost of living in Georgia. Check out Peachtree City as well - far enough away from Atlanta, but close enough to check out the nightlife.....
You need to fly out here with your wife, rent a car and spend a couple of days driving around. You'll fine that the area north of Atlanta and I-285 much to your liking.
I grew in Sandy Springs (north side of Atlanta). Lived all over the east coast. My brother lives in Roswell. Nice area but still a lot of traffic.
My sister lives in Canton. Nice area. Up I-75 and about 30-45 minutes north of the city. Just getting into the mountains of north Ga. I always thought if I had to move back, that's were I'd want to live.
I live in the mountains of western NC. A town called Asheville. To me this is paradise. Having lived in Atlanta, Charlotte, Philly among other places I too was tired of city living. Western NC is the most fantastic place to live. Great for owning and driving a corvette. I live about a mile from the entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Not quite the Pacific Coast Hwy, but one of the better drives on the east coast.
Here is a link to some info on Asheville. Always ranks as one of the top places to live in the country. Cosmopolitan vibe with small town feel.
My wife grew up in Ashville NC, we were up there in April to bury her Mom next to her Dad.
I was surprised at the number of (let's call them hippies for a lack of a better word) hippies on the streets in down town Ashville playing music for money. It seemed like they were every 50 feet playing a guitar with a tip jar. Still overall Ashville is a great place.
I have heard good things about South Carolina in terms of milder summers and beaches.
Subscribed as I too am looking to leave the Chicago area in favor of some Southern comfort.
Mild summers? Compared to Death Valley maybe! Columbia set a new record last year: 113 degrees. And when you add the humidity, you realize just how tough the folks were before A/C was commonplace.
If you live at the beach, you'll get a breeze much of the time that helps moderate the heat.

I live on the other side of the mountains in East Tennessee-the land of peace and quiet. Maryville TN was rated one of the top ten places to retire in the country (and it looks like the word has got out ). Low property tax, no income taxes, low cost of living. I moved here in 1994 from NJ and I don't want to live anywhere else. C'mon down and check this area out!

Do some research on Charleston SC. Beautiful town, close to the beach, Boeing, Air Force Base, and beautiful people! Lot to do here and see. Good luck man
i love Georgia!!! It's a great place to live. But like anywhere else it has it's highs and lows. Will you like the Roswell or Cumming area? I would say yes you will. You mentioned enjoying your retirement so if you're coming after you retire the interstate traffic won't be a problem for you. If you're coming here to work and then retire, you should know our rush hours can be an absolute night mare!! If you did live in Cumming and worked in the metro area you would soon find out that Ga. 400 can be very crowded during the morning and evening rush.
Plenty of good real estate available and you'll like our prices compared to what you're used to out there. No problem finding places where your neighbor won't be seeing everything you do. You mentioned 1/3 of an acre..... You can do better than that. You'll know what I mean when you get here and take a look. North Ga mountains are beautiful in the Summer, Fall and winter and makes for great get aways on the weekends. Lake Lanier is a large lake with appx 500 miles of shore line. Plenty of Malls and eating places all over the place.
Come visit your buddy out here and look around some. You'll find just the right place! You'll fit in fine as long as you can get used to hearing a nice southern drawl and get used to, ya'll and "I'm fixin to"
Example: Ya'll come on over and look around, I'm fixin to end this little post and go to another thread.
