Ihave been watching "The civil War' on pbs and would like to take a ride up to Appomattox and see some of the battlegrounds there in Virginia, Perhaps on the way to the 50th anniversary .are there any scenic routes there that wind thru some of the battles grounds? I also could not help but thinking that these men/boys that gave their lives ,how they would react if they ever got a chance to lay their eyes on a C5 or for that matter the leaders if only they could have had an inkling of how far this country has advanced since their time perhaps the would have realized slavery and opposition was not needed. Loke to hear from some forum members who live up around apponattox, thanks! :chevy :seeya
Historical Appomattox is a quiet, pretty little place. The McLean House where that @$%&#$ drunk Grant accepted Saint Lee's surrender is a fine, solid place full of dark old wood and a great front porch. But I don't remember anything about the roads leading to it.
They are great trips. The Nashville club made a run down to Shiloh National Military Park this summer.
I am a Civil War reenactor and history buff. I have visited most of the major battlefields and even reenacted most of the battles. In Va. I would recommend the Museum of the Confederacy, Monument Blvd, Petersburg and Gaines Mill. These are all in and around Richmond.
May be too much for one day, but you can check the National Park Service websites for more info.
