Memphis, TN folks
Is TN a front plate state?
Any performance shops in this area?
Car Clubs as a way to meet new people?
Feedback?
Thanks

Tom

Memphis is rough, not a place I’d personally want to live in. If your job is taking you there I would plan on a long commute. Wouldn’t want to live too close to the city. They do have great barbecue though!!

If you don't care about the school system, then I would recommend Fayette county (Hickory Withe, Oakland, etc.) as taxes are 1/2 to 1/4 that of Shelby county. One issue you may end up having is finding a house, most in the Bartlett/Arlington/Unincorporated Shelby & Fayette Counties are sold at or above the asking price within days of being listed on the market. The good news is the drive is basically the same, and sometimes less, than what you would deal with in town and you have more space to spread out. There are also some good roads out that way to take on a country cruise.
I would go ahead and join the Arlington TN Facebook page as they often post houses that will soon be hitting the market on the page.
As far as clubs go there is a Corvette Club that is pretty active here in Memphis - https://www.corvettememphisinc.com/info. I have yet to join, but often see them at swap meets and drive-ins around town.
Pre-COVID there was a weekly drive-in in Bartlett on Thursday nights that I often frequented. I am not sure if they have started meeting this year. Rumor had it that the Corvette Club was the group that originally started it, but I can not confirm that. The event is listed on their "Events" tab though.
You will want to check out the Memphis International Raceway in Millington - http://www.racemir.com/. They generally host large events several times throughout the year, with the super chevy show being one of those.
Good luck in finding something, I'm sure you will enjoy it. - LG
Only reason I am doing so as Illinois is becoming way to corrupted and getting to costly to live in. Just moving to Tennessee I would save $1000 a month alone on housing and state income taxes. Property taxes here are costly compared to TN and would save a ton just alone on that. My house here is 2200 SQ ft and the same house in TN is alot cheaper and is even newer construction than mine ( I am talking close to $75k-$100k cheaper). Plus I dont have to deal with SNOW in TN. Tired of Snow. Ill deal with ice storms here and there but not 7"-12" of snow that turns to ice every other week.
I know no place is perfect otherwise everybody would be living there. I just think its my time to get out of Illinois.

The drive is generally not too bad, several years back they did a lot of work to the main interstate interchange and that has helped reduce backup and congestion from what it was. There still is some, but not near what it was. Depending on what part of the city you work in the commute can be very different. I work near the airport and my commute is 35 minutes in and the same back barring any major wreaks. When you say corp, is that the USACE?
Arlington schools are supposed to be good (or at least I'm told, don't have any school-aged children). I know many people who graduated from AHS back in the day and they seem alright (most of them anyway).
You shouldn't have to deal with too much snow around here, last time it snowed and actually stuck/turned to ice was about 5 years ago. For several winters it was pretty nice, generally not getting down to freezing and staying around 40 degrees when it was cold. Last winter it got down to about 10°, but only for a week or two. The worst part about getting below freezing around here is none of the buildings are built for it. You have to put covers over all of the outside spigots to keep them from freezing up. As far as the heat and humidity go, you will get used to it after a couple of years. Just be ready to sweat it out for the summer!
There are some good car hangouts in the Southaven area. I have the name of one of the best LS tuners anywhere I can give you. He uses a shop in Pontotoc MS for his dyne work.
Feel free to PM me and I will give you my number if you have more questions. Ive lived here my whole life.

There is still one section of Memphis that's not good but every large city has its bad side.

FYI, couple things to know about MS: They have an income tax, TN does not, their wheel tax is based on the value of the car (I've heard it gets significantly reduced at year 10), TN's is not.
I know several people who live in Memphis and love it, and the same goes for North MS. Most of the decision is based on where you work and what things you want to be close to. In the end, you need to make an informed decision based on facts and what works for you. Good luck!
