Some of you will remember the Covered Bridge Corvette Cruise mrs.savewave and I organized last spring. Despite the fact that the weather forecast was for severe weather all weekend, 40-something Corvettes (and chase vehicles) showed up to begin the run in a driving thunderstorm.
The weather improved before the day was over, however, and we ended up having a great Corvette adventure.
So, we’re going to try Version Two of the event on Saturday, April 26. Here are the tentative details:
8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. – Sign in, pick up registration packets, name tags and have a Continental breakfast (sausage bisquits, cheese grits, muffins, donuts, coffee, orange juice and soft drinks) at my house in Mountain Brook, AL.
10 a.m. – Depart for the Clarkson Bridge in Cullman County, AL., traveling via Interstate 65 north with one rest stop along the way.
11:40 a.m. – Arrive at the Clarkson Bridge – just north of Hwy. 278. There is ample Corvette parking at the park where the bridge is situated. The paving on the lot is deteriorating, however, so enter and exit carefully.
The Clarkson (Legg) Covered Bridge is a two-span, Town Truss bridge crossing a deep gorge of Crooked Creek. It was built in 1904 and is 250 feet long and 12 feet wide. It is one of the longest covered bridges standing in the Deep South. The bridge underwent extensive repairs in 1923 and again in 1976. It is scheduled for disassembly shortly after our visit with a grant that will allow it to be refurbished and then put back in place.

12:40 p.m. – Depart for lunch at Calabria’s, an Italian restaurant in the restored warehouse district of Cullman, AL. The family-style menu of four entrees, salad, dessert, beverage, tax and tip will be $11.95 each. Parking is available at the restaurant, but we’ll probably try to put all of our Corvettes together across the street in the Chamber of Commerce parking lot.
2:30 p.m. – Ave Maria Grotto. This is a four-acre park known as “Jerusalem in Miniature,” designed to provide a natural setting for the 125 miniature reproductions of some of the most famous historic buildings and shrines of the world. There is a large, paved parking lot.

For those who prefer to shop, there is a variety of antique shops and store-front boutiques near the restaurant in the historic district near the restaurant.

3:30 p.m. – Depart.
We’ll need a headcount by April 19 in order to have enough breakfast for everybody and to let Calabria’s know how many of us to expect for lunch. A $3 registration fee will confirm your attendance and cover your breakfast. Send it to:
