Default Marc (Shoptek) Update 6/03

Well-
We have turned a corner. He is improving today. Although he is still plagued with fevers-they tell us they could simply be a normal process after surgery and not an infection. They did do a chest x-ray today and blood and urine cultures-so far everything looks good. No growth after 36 hours on the cultures. He is walking around pretty good. His shoulder is still really bothering him, though. I think if that were ok-he would be doing a lot better. His sternal incision is healing beautifully and hardly bothers him, and the leg incisions only bother him when he is walking around. He is starting to experience some of the emotional trauma that goes along with such surgery. Kind of a "why me" phenomena.

So we are looking at a 6-8 week recovery. No driving for 6 weeks. No going out to eat for 1 month. Lots of no-no's!
Thanks so much for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers. You have all been great!

Lisa- glad to hear Marc is doing well  Just try to keep him away from the naughty nurses or I'll make a call to Nurse Helga with the big hands and box of rubber gloves to pay him a visit :jester Seriously though, I'm glad the doctors caught the problem in time and Marc is going to be OK. Looks like you have the Vette all to yourself for 2 months now :D Just make sure Marc behaves himself and follows the doctors orders. Get well soon buddy!

Scott-maybe you should give me Helga's phone number-I may need it to keep him in line! :yesnod:

And Olivier-I know, no Chicken Philly's for him for a long while. I don't know how he is going to do it!

They won't let you drive for 6 weeks because it generally takes that long for the sternum to heal...

Very good ! That's exactly what Lisa said the doctor told her.

It is a tough thing when we are told we cannot drive... we never even
think about not driving. It is such a natural thing.

I know with Lisa by his side, Marc will be a good patient.
Besides, I'm available for "enforcement" duties :smash:

Wow, no driving for 6 weeks. I guess that is small in comparision with everything else.

I spoke with Marc today... he is still in the hospital, but expects to be

released tonight or tomorrow

He is healing slowly, and looking forward to going home.

He seems to be doing very well so soon after this type of operation.

For those of you that arent familiar with a 'sternal incision' It goes something like this: The surgeon makes a skin incision with a scapel. There is very little bleeding at this point. Whatever is bleeding is touched up with a cauterizing device....using elesctricity you 'burn' the 'bleeders' kinda....zap zap zap. Using what resembles a handheld jig zaw, the surgoen saws through the sternum. The saw is nitrogen powered with line pressure around 150p.s.i.

How do you close this? Stainless steel wires. Anywhere from 4 to 8 depending on patient size and surgical techniques. The wires are pushed through each side of the sternum then 'tied' together in the middle and cut.

You cant do anything for at least 6 weeks. No golf, no strong hugs, no lifting, no driving, no nothing. Any strenuous activity may shift the sternum causing un-equal pressure in the chest which may requiring re-wiring or it may lead to a collapsed lung.

Just relax....do nothing, let time and your family take care of everything.

Jim
