It appears as if my 04Z is starting to have Issues with the column lock bypass. Im going to be in Socal this weekend to pick up my car from WCC. What dealer would you folks rec. to me to have this work done. Any advice would be appreciated.

The dealer will only charge you and arm/leg and then screw it up. Buy a Column Lock Bypass and do it yourself, or talk to WCC, they probably have the same fix.

I thought 04's didn't have locking wheels anymore?

If your headed north stop at Paradise Chevy in Ventura and ask for Jaime. They just did this for a friend of mine ........ no charge, they even paid for towing !!!

I am headed North, I did a little bit of research and one of the threads stated that a weak battery would cause it to act up. Im thinking this certainly could be the issue as WCC has had the car for roughly two weeks.

WCC said they dont work on the CLB

A recall was issued by Chevrolet for the steering column lock problem. Weak battery or not, you should take it to a dealer and they'll fix it free of charge. Good luck.

It's the battery............I had the same issue with my 04Z just 4 months ago, it was the original battery - NEW battery & problem solved !

I'll say it again, spend $50 and buy a CLB. Dealer fixes only guarantee more work and aggrevation...sooner or later.

OMG !!!!

I can't believe this is still being debated.

About a year and a half ago I got my first C5. It only had 24,000 miles on it. It seemed to be a perfect car.

I checked the GM History report and it had the latest and greatest GM Column fix.

I kept reading on the forum here that the GM fix was still faulty and it would leave me stranded some day.

I really did not want to tear into the dash of such a perfect car, but I kept worrying about being stranded every time I went out for long distant drives.

I kept asking for advice on the forum concerning my worries and I got beat to death with advice telling me to JUST CHANGE IT.

So I ordered a CLB from Corvettes of Houston.

The instructions provided along with the instructions given on the forum made it soooo easy.... I think there is even a tutorial here on the forum with actual photographs of step-by-step instructions so that there is no guessing as to even what screws to remove.

It was worth the peace of mind to JUST DO IT.

I don't think it took more than a lazy hour from start to finish and I never have to worry again.

PS ..... if you still insist on using the GM fix, I can sell you the one I removed REALLY cheap

I think I threw in the corner of the garage somewhere but if you REALLY want it, I can manage to part with it

I just found mine the other day when cleaning an old box of miscellaneous parts. In the trash now...

Had the same problem two weeks ago, purchased the CLB and installed it in about 30 mins. Simple fix, all is good. Good Luck!

Just ordered one for my 03Z. You all talked me into it. Would feel really stupid after knowing about this for a long time and then reading this thread. More insurance just like valve springs. Thanks guys for the reminder.
