Default Time to Plan the Annual Yosemite Run 10/18 - 10/19

Let's do another fall color trip the weekend of October 18th & 19th.
For the veterans it will be the same as last year with addition of going through the June Lake loop off of Hwy 395. For those that did that, it was an incredible color show.

Saturday, the Big Trees, the Valley/lunch, Glacier Point, Sentinel Dome hike, and back to Oakhurst.
Sunday Leave Oakhurst, and come in through the Merced River Canyon, up Hwy 120 to Tioga Pass and out to June Lake.
Friday/Saturday we will stay at the Best Western in Oakhurst. I will see what I can do about getting a good room price once I know the rough level of participation.
Sunday night at a TBD hotel in June Lake for those wanting to extend the trip into that area and head home Monday. There will be a split point on Sunday for those wanting to head home that day.
I want to get this planned now because hotels can still fill up at that time of year.
You will put some miles on your car, but in one of the most scenic places in the world. This is a whirlwind tour, and Saturday can be a long day, you have the option to head back to the hotel at any point and keep it sane :D
I just want to warn you in advance.
Let me know if you are interested :steering:

Steve,

Sign Pam and I up. I highly recommend the Tahoe area also. The following are some photos from last years cruise.

The consummate cruise organizer points out areas of interest. :iagree:

Cruising Yosemite. :steering:

Cruising the June Lake Loop. :steering:

Cruising South of Tahoe heading to Ebbetts Pass. :steering:

Finally Steve ponders why he puts himself through this every year and swears he will not do anymore Yosemite cruises. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

OK!!! SafetyAgentMan... Awesome pictures.... looking forward to it already. I like that contemplative look,,,,, and yes that is probably what I was thinking when the entrance ranger gave us grief about parking, and we had just started
Good to see returnees...
Looking forward to this one already.

Hi Steve,

Barbara and I are planning on going again this year! We really appreciate your leading this event again.

To anyone who doesn't know Steve: He's the perfect host.. He'll show you all the best of Yosemite while leaving you free to explore as little or as much as you want.

Here is a link to my pics from last year: http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/bc/fko...te2002&.view=t. That was a great weekend with a fun group!

Something to consider for other S. Cals: Barb and I spent Sunday night in Mammoth Lakes. If off-season, so the rooms are real cheap, but the food and accomodations are much nicer than in Lee Vining

Pat's been bugging me about the next Yosemite run since last October. When I told her you said you might not do one this year, she said "He can't do that!".

Sign us up.

CRS is kicking in, what are the names of the motels in Oakhurst and Lee Vining?

June Lake sounds good as well.

Hey John,

Mammoth Lakes is where we'll be staying on the last nite. I've stayed a solid week at Mammoth before and had lots to do (hiking, fishing, golfing, shopping, etc) it's a 4 season resort.

October is after their summer peak, but before the ski season, so it was pretty slow there last year. In fact, we stayed at a brand new top-notch resort for a special walk-in rate of $69! Their peak-season rates are $300 and up.

From Lee Vining, it's a short (60-90 minute) drive to Mammoth. Plus we can take the June Lake loop again and see awesome fall colors again (hopefully).

Steve H: I only stayed in Lee Vining for 15 minutes, but that was enough to know! :D

Damn,

I'm supposed to go to a wedding that weekend. Haven't RSVP'd yet. I may go with you. I can let you hear the difference the sub makes. I think we both went with JL audio for the fronts and rears.

I didn't feel like answering your question, so I'll answer a different one instead! :D

It's been about six years since I was a tour guide and went through Mammoth Lakes regularly with my groups. We stayed at the Alpenhof, which isn't much from a rooms and services perspective... so it doesn't get my recommendation. But they have a restaurant called the Matterhorn that really serves excellent high-end food. I used to love getting their raclette. I see online that they are still in business, so if you want a touch of luxury dining (it's on the expensive side, but not outrageous) I give them a hearty  . Most of the other restaurants in town are burger and pizza joints (not that there's anything wrong with that).

If Diana and her husband still run the Body Works massage on the main drag, I definitely recommend them to remove the stress from the day's driving. They have a couples room so you and the SO can stay together, and they have a shower so you can get the oils off afterwards if you don't like that feeling (I don't like putting my clothes on over it). They are incredibly friendly and easygoing and she was my favorite masseur from any of my travels. [For the cynics and pervs among you, this is all straightforward, nonsexual. Relaxation and stress relief only!]

Call beforehand and let them know when you'll be getting into town.

I don't think I'll be able to make the run, but I just thought I'd offer my two cents.

Oh yeah... Black bears were a nightly guarantee back in the old days. Civilization might have pushed them back into the mountains a little more, or the resident businesses might have gotten better about locking up the dumpsters at night, but without fail every time I was there, the bears came lumbering up to the trash cans near the Alpenhof (usually around midnight). One evening a bear chased my driver back into the bus and held him there for a while when he was trying to wash it (the bus, not the bear) around dusk!

Sounds like Mammoth is the place. I will check it out. I will be in that area from the 23rd through the 31st, so I sould have a few minutes to scope and get back to everyone.

The hotel in Oakhurst is the Best Western Gateway Inn
