Default Relocation to Phoenix

My company is potentially offering me a great opportunity in Phoenix. Any advice on the area and where to consider buying a house? I'd like to poke around the real estate sites to get an idea of what I could afford. The office would be around the Sky Harbor area. I don't mind commuting an hour if it'd mean getting a better place.

I've heard Scottsdale is pretty nice. Is that true? Any others areas? I have young kids so schools would be a consideration. Thanks.

Greetings from the Phoenix area!

Scottsdale is very nice, expecially the further north you go - which is in the opposite direction of the airport. It is also pretty pricey - but I'm not sure what price range you are looking at.

I live in the southeast valley - specifically Chandler. Chandler is one of the fastest growing areas in Arizona and the U.S. The part of Chandler in which I reside is what would be considered northwest Chandler. I am approximately equal distance between two major freeways - I10 and the Loop 101, and the south leg of the 202 is about two miles to the south.

Chandler has really developed into a great area with fantastic shopping - great schools (Kyrene school district), it's about fifteen minutes south of ASU, and about fifteen minutes from Sky Harbor.

Everything is pretty new around here - lot's of construction going on south of me, even with a slightly depressed housing market. It is a buyer's market right now so while this is not a great time to sell a house, it's a pretty good time to buy one, or so my realtor friends say.

Obviously I am biased - I like the area that I live in and wouldn't consider moving out. Less expensive housing is available in the West valley, Peoria, Surprise, Buckeye, Glendale, etc. But those areas would be a solid one hour commute to the Sky Harbor area, especially in the rush hour.

South of me - Queen Creek, even Casa Grande offers a lot of new housing too - but again commuting times grow, and that can get pretty tedious, not to mention wear and tear on your commuter vehicle.

If you have more specific questions feel free to PM me, and I'd be happy to spend some time answering questions, either on the phone or through email. Good luck with your decision!

We moved here from Ohio about 16 years ago and although the Buckeye state will always be regarded as "home", we certainly love it here--especially being able to enjoy the Vettes year round.

I'll send you an message with some other thoughts and links - -

Regards-

Randy is right, the area in the East Valley and Ahwatukee is a great place to be, if you are going to be around the Airport. The West valley wil be a bit of a commute, on a very crowded freeway (I-10). The Kyrene School district and Tempe High School District are real good. My son and daughter went through school there. My daughter is now a teacher in the Kyrene school district My wife is has been selling homes here since 92. This isn't a pitch for her, I just listen to her stories a lot.
