Hello from sunny Tacoma. My wife and I will be in San Antonio the end of January to attend our sons graduation from Air Force basic training... (proud of that young man) Question, is there a any good Texmex or ? restaurants close to Lackland that you would recommend for first timers? We visit south AZ often and love good Mexican, but would love to try something more "Texan"
The Riverwalk is great for "tourist" mexican food....I've been to the places mentioned above and they are all fine. But if you want the real thing go to La Fogata on Vance Jackson road about 20 minutes northwest of downtown....it's housed in an old gas station grown to fill a whole city block among palm trees and patios...very nice! Mi Tierra is in the mexican market place (El Mercado) on the west side of downtown. Los Barrios Hacienda is on the far north side about 35 minutes north of downtown on U.S. 281 but the food is excellent and served by a family that has been in the resturant business here for 60 years.
Now, if you want some suggestions on where to get the best margarita.....I'll have to TAKE you there myself and SHOW you what to order!
Congrats on you son's graduation...we've had some fine young men come through San Antonio.....Bienvenidos!
Can't believe the locals sending you to tourista joints to pay tourista prices. This is a bit of a dive but go a little after the normal lunch hour to avoid the line outside. I prefer this location. Very reasonable prices & great food. Just order the Mexican dinner plate.
Blanco Cafe ( http://blancocafe.net/Locations.html )
1720 Blanco Rd. (Blanco & Elsmere - MidTown)
San Antonio, TX 78212

I agree I have only been here going on 3 years...downtown food sucks try the hole in the wall spots and family owned places Blanco Cafe and the other places are pretty good and they are the real deal...
And another good one is Los Barrios at 4223 Blanco Road. It's just south of the intersection of Blanco and Basse. Kinda like La Fogata, Los Barrios started off in an old Dairy Queen and has expanded also to take up almost a city block. Great food and margaritas also. As a matter of fact, I'm meeting up with the wife here in about 45 minutes for Friday evening supper. Enjoy your stay.
las palapas on i-10 and callaghan, if you want true tex mex without the tourist flare. also, if you want to take a road trip go to clear spring cafe in clear springs texas, which is on hwy 46 between new braunfels and seguin. don't forget about fredericksburg tx for another road trip deep into the hill country of texas. i can go on for days, man i miss TX.
