I'm in the process of getting my new C4 on the road, and I am registering it as an antique (yes, I understand the restrictions).
I got a set of 1987 plates to match the car, and when I went to process the title, they gave me a new sticker for the plate and said I have to put that on top of the 1987 sticker. Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the plate being a valid 1987 plate to begin with?
I just want to check with the community before I put that sticker on the plate and cannot undo it.

slayer,
I refinished a set of '64 plates and then made a small metal tab to hold the five year antique registration sticker issued by the State of Texas.
The picture below was taken just before the antique registration renewed from 3/2013 to 3/2018.
That's a great idea. That tag does look like its clearly not actually on the plate though. Have you considered a way to make it look more 'natural'? maybe double sided tape on the corners... to stick the tag on the plate without disturbing the original sticker underneath?
the 1987 era plates have a indentation in the plate for where the sticker is supposed to go. that may help me... or hurt me.
In your case, I think the sticker needs to be on the tag. They really weren't '87 tags, we just kept the same tag and put a new sticker on over the previous one, i.e. 85, 86, 87...
I don't know when they stopped stamping a new tag for each year, but I think it was in the 70's.
Like Old Toy I have run "1965" plates on '65 vette and '65 Plymouth for years and never been stopped for plates - in Panhandle of Texas + DFW area and now Hill Country. All of my "stops" have to do with " If you have a minute I have a question or can I look"

Interesting. I have antique tags on my C3, and there is a metal tag, not a sticker.

This is approximately what the metal tags they gave me look like. I thought that was what everyone in TX got. I don't have mine actually on the plate because in order to do so, I'd have to mount it upside down. LOL
I have my metal tag wedged between my license plate and license plate frame at the bottom center. Thinking about just putting it in the glove box.
I think you have the option of a metal tag or a windshield sticker now in Texas.
I asked, and they said for antique plates, there is only the plate sticker. It looks like they stopped stamping the date around 75,which is when they switched to issuing stickers (which is why I have an indention in my plate for the sticker to go, and why they must offer a metal tag for people who don't have a spot for the sticker to go)
