I had a 1961 Chevy with a 235 6 cyl. I had a split manifold and it had the sweetest sounding exhaust. I was going down a hill on West End Ave in Nashville and dropped the Powerglide into low to decelerate for the stoplight on 21st Ave. It was rapping very nicely and a Patrol car was nearby. They stopped me.
Sgt Dollarhide said: "What's wrong with your muffler Boy?"
I said: "I have 2 mufflers and they are both working fine. Semi trucks make a whole lot more noise going up that hill when they go through the gears after stopping at the red light."
He said: "Don't get smart with me Boy - I am taking you to jail" I think there was some resentment about my being a Vanderbilt student.
They put the cuffs on me and towed my car to an impound lot. It was a Saturday night and they took me to the night judge after they fingerprinted me. The Judge refused to issue an arrest warrant and told them they were being ridiculous. I never even had to say a word. I got my car from the impound lot and finally got reimbursed for the towing charges.
I can tell you it surely wasn't pleasant being in the back of a patrol car in handcuffs.
