Oh man. I think I can help with this. I have detailed maps of all the counties in TX in CAD. Last month I took a back roads cruise out to Austin taking back roads all the way. Last week took a cruise up to Navasota. These maps help me to find good roads without having to drive around aimlessly.

There are several really nice roads just past Austin that are supposed to be a lot of fun to drive. Anyhow, count me in on the route planning. Maybe someone else will know of a good place to stop for lunch.

Here is FM 3090 which is north of Navasota.

Here is Lime Creek Road which is just northwest of Austin.

Depends on what part of the Hill Country you are visiting. I still don't know a decent back road route, I always just take 290 to visit my parents north of Austin.
If northwest Hill Country check out Marble Falls and Burnet area.
If soutwest check out Wemberly (Devil's Backbone is a really fun drive), Fredericksburg, or really south is Bandera.
If close to Austin, Lime Creek Road is pretty cool, goes around Lake Travis. Dumped my KZ1000 there in college, but wasn't seriously injured. Fun road.
Dinner at the Oasis on Lake Travis used to be nice, haven't been in years, though. There's a little icehouse on Devil's Backbone near Wemberly that serves up a pretty good burger and beer, too.
Have fun!

Ok here it goes.
From austin head out fm 2222 to 620, take lime creek road to 1431 take a left and head to marble falls. Eat at the Bluebonnet cafe(best pies anywhere) then head back out on 1431 towards lake LBJ and then on to Inks lake and hwy 29 then back to austin. Don't know of a better cruise in central Texas. Winding switchbacks, up and down some nice speed sections and great views.
You could also try 290 to Henley take a left just passed the town sign head on that road to blanco then up 281 or turn off of that road and head to wimberly and the devils backbone(highway 31 I think). You can get to it just south of blanco on 281.
Have fun.
