Prosecutors say driver stole $96,000
By Todd Ruger
.
A driver for a Quad-City area armored car company reported bags of money stolen from his truck during a scheduled stop, only to purchase a $46,539 car with cash about a month later, federal prosecutors allege.
.
The day after the car purchase, Shawn Beaird asked a Bettendorf bank about bringing in $49,000 cash he had withdrawn from a business account and getting a cashier’s check, something bank employees called strange, prosecutors said in a forfeiture complaint filed last week in U.S. District Court, Rock Island.
.
The prosecutors cited that and other investigative information in the complaint to say there is probably cause to believe Beaird purchased the 2004 Chevrolet Corvette from the theft of $96,000 from his truck on Sept. 20.
.
Prosecutors are asking the U.S. District Court for Central Illinois to forfeit the car to the United States for disposition because they believe he used the stolen money. The QUAD-CITY TIMES could not find any criminal charges filed against Beaird in connection to the case.

Beaird, who was an armored carrier responsible for picking up the cash and check deposits at Jewel Food Stores in Silvis, Ill., East Moline and Moline, called his supervisors during one of his scheduled stops at SouthPark Mall in Moline and reported a missing bag of cash, prosecutors allege.
.
It later was discovered that two other bags were missing, and a preliminary investigation Oct. 4 by United Armored Services armored carrier company determined about $96,000 collected from Jewel Food Stores on Sept. 20 was stolen from the truck, prosecutors said.
.
On Nov. 3, an acquaintance of Beaird told investigators that one morning in September Beaird said he had to go to the bank and returned with a backpack containing $100,000 cash, which Beaird placed into his bottom dresser drawer, prosecutors allege.
.
The acquaintance also told investigators that she saw Beaird place $20,000 in her purse before they went to NorthPark Mall and bought a $3,000 diamond ring and a $500 men’s watch, prosecutors said.
.
Receipts from Kay Jewelers confirmed the two purchases on Sept. 21, the day after the reported theft from the armored truck, prosecutors said.
.
On Nov. 3, employees of Lujack’s NorthPark Auto Plaza in Davenport told investigators Beaird and his stepfather, Gary Richardson, purchased the 2004 Corvette with cash from a small blue and white cooler, the complaint states.
.
The Corvette was put in the name of the stepfather but it was clear to the Lujack’s employees that Beaird was the purchaser and owner because he made all the decisions, conducted all negotiations and paid for the vehicle, prosecutors said in the complaint.
.
Beaird and Richardson could not be reached for comment Tuesday by the Times.
