Essay for Fire 740

Why are you here?

I’m here first of all to learn more about aspects of the fire service such as building construction and safety. This class is also a requirement for entry into the fire academy and it is also a transferable course that I will need for transfer to CSULA.

What do you want to get out of this class?

I want to learn more about safety for my future occupation as a firefighter. What I learn here could one day save my life as well as the people on my crew. After the first day of class it has become apparent I will also be learning many new things about buildings and their construction that will help me out in life in general. I’ve done many side projects around my own home and helpings friends with such things as building decks, knocking down walls, helping to remodel a home, as well as installing various appliances. I believe knowing more about how homes are built will help in some of these projects.

What do you hope to do once you’re in the fire service? When do you plan on joining the fire service?

In the short term I plan on finishing with CSM with my AA degree, my EMT cert (already done), and my FF1 cert from the academy. This should all be done this school year. After that, I plan on transferring to CSULA to get my BS in fire science administration and technology. After finishing school and possibly getting my paramedics license (depends on what the future demands and requirements are for the departments that I’ll be applying to…) I hope to become a firefighter with a larger department. I would like to do some type of search and rescue. At this point I’m still learning about the different positions within the fire department. But I want to be someone who actually goes into the building (possibly search and rescue) and god willing save whoever may be inside. One of the reasons I mentioned a larger department is because the reality is that we all have lives and bills and I hope to one day to have a family and I want to be able to support them. To do that I will need a good steady job and that is something the fire service offers to the few that can make it. One of my big goals at that point, after putting in my time and gaining some experience, along with the respect and trust of my brother firefighters, I want to move up in the fire department. I have hopes of one day making Chief. That is one of my main motivations for continuing on with school past an “AA degree” and going for a “BS degree.” I want to continue onto grad school to get my masters in business administration. Only time will tell if I have the financial resources to pursue that goal of getting a masters degree. All of this, along with lots and lots of hard work and determination will one day, hopefully, help me to fulfill my goal to make Chief.
