First of all, bring duct tape! The upper rear seam on the top ripped all the way from side to side during a storm in Wyoming.

Other useful stuff in the cockpit of my 67 during a nearly 5,000-mile drive from northern CA thru NV, UT and ID to WY and SD in 04. The ear protectors are for when you are really, really tired of the drone and thrash of your old Vette. The XM radio and CD player keep you entertained even in remote places. The fire extinguisher is a morale builder. The padded gloves (on the speaker grille) help you grasp that skinny, hard steering wheel hour after hour.

I also had along a spare alternator, water pump, oil filter, tune up parts, PS and AC belts, and carb rebuild kit. The hoses and antifreeze were new (fortunately, since it froze in Yellowstone in May 2004).

Like someone mentioned, have a cell phone and AAA card and you're good to go. I tried to stay on back roads for all 5K miles, but if you'll be on interstates then there's always more available emergency assistance. You can tailor your spare-parts list depending on how adventuresome your trip will be.

You'll be amazed at the reaction to your classic Vette our there in Winnebagoland. Every gas stop will become a convention of folks interested in your car, or with stories of the one they used to have, etc. It will become your summer's high point. However you do it --- DO IT!
