Learning how to use a porter cable and menzerna polish was the best thing I ever did. If you are a DIY / hands on type of person you can do it. But you need an old car to practice on first. I lived with swirl marks on the hood of my black C5 for 4 years. I was afraid to let anyone go near it with a polisher. When I got my '79 Camaro painted, they left it full of swirls. I had no choice. I was not about to take it back to the painter. I had to learn. I studied in the car care section here for about a month and educated myself (with the help of the experts in that section). I practiced on my old truck first.

Then I removed the swirls from my Camaro.

after

After I did the truck and the Camaro, I was brave enough to work on the vette. The swirls were GONE after I finished (they were not very deep)
Makes me wish I had done it 4 years sooner !
p.s. I did try removing some scuffs from a few spots on my black C5 (not on the hood) with 3M perfect it swirl remover - by hand. It always improved the area but there were still fine swirl marks and I lived with that for 3 or 4 years. After I got my confidence using the PC, I hit those areas with the PC and the places where I had hand rubbed were gone. IMHO, once you learn to use a random orbital, it provides a superior finish to hand rubbing.
