This is what I can currently see with the Torque App:

Note: there is some overlap in the bottom screen capture:

Currently, I log Engine Oil temp during my HPDE sessions using the Torque Pro App via Bluetooth OBDii adapter. I log Oil Temp PID: 221154, equation: A-40.. Last event I noticed there was about a 30* delta in what the DIC said oil temp was and what I was logging. At one point the app registered 235*F for engine oil but the DIC stated 266*F. At the time of these measurements my records state an Ambient of 98*F and an Intake temp of 107*F.

Questions:
  • Does anyone know exactly how oil flows through a Dry-Sump LS3 engine and where along in that path oil temperature is measured?
  • Is engine oil temp measured in two places?
  • Are the two oil temp readings I saw trustworthy values?
  • Is the oil entering the engine the lower value and that the dry sump the higher?

My assumptions are that the oil measured at the engine is the 230*F and the oil measured in the dry-sump tank is 260*F. This is because since the event I've watched the OBDii temp reading come up to temp normally in street driving while the DIC reading take several additional miles to come up to match operating temp.

So far I know #18 in the bottom picture is a temperature sensor but I'm not sure to which number it reports to.

Is your method based on comparing raw data at full throttle in a small section of the track? That can work too I think, basically eliminating all the variables we're not interested in.

BTW if you figure out new PIDs for the Torque app let me know. I'm very interested in logging more than the default PIDs.

Short Answer:
Yes

Long Answer:

Currently I'm trying to understand/verify why my car feels like power rolls off at bit near the top of 4th going up the big hill on the back straight. So far it appears that about 3.5-4 degrees timing gets pulled around 125MPH @ 5500 RPM every time. What's more interesting is that it doesn't happen on the front straight even though speeds are similar and the conditions are the same minus the big hill.

In theory, you could use your raw data to graph similar info to what I've listed below. I imagine you would take one of your flying laps earlier in the day and compare it to a lap when temps are high. it wouldn't tell you if the engine was running optimally earlier in the day but it least should show a relative change. Lastly, I like to use engine runtime as a marker because it makes it easier to line up the data with laps.

For my YouTube videos I hide the engine runtime counter but for my personal ones I use it to quickly line up the videos and the data.

Lap 3 Back straight pull starts @ 9:00
Lap 9 Back straight pull starts @ 22:40

Lap 3 Conditions:
  • Ambient: 87
  • Intake: 93
  • Coolant: 217-219
  • Oil: 215 (approx 225 in DS tank)

Lap 9 Conditions:
  • Ambient: 88
  • Intake: 93-96
  • Coolant: 228-230
  • Oil: 233 (approx 260 in DS tank)
